BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY

Last night, in the good company of some aunts and cousins, I finally saw Jersey Boys, on Broadway.  I’d been wanting to see it for so long and am thrilled that it lived up to all the hype it’s garnered.  The show is absolutely fantastic!

The music made me tap, clap, and cry.  Yes, cry.  I was literally weeping throughout the mostly feel-good musical, which has become pretty standard for me lately.  It really got me thinking- since I gave birth, I’m a total cry baby.

There are a whole host of situations that shouldn’t really merit such an intense flood of emotion but sure enough my eyes well up and floweth over.  Here are the biggest instigators:

- Singing of the national anthem.  Sure I’m patriotic but come on! Combine it with this next one and I might as well be at a funeral…

- Adulation, applause, and standing ovations.  I can’t explain it fully except that I feel moved by the energy of the crowd and maybe for one small second I can imagine what it’s like to be in the shoes of the person(s) being honored.

- Open mic at Big Bub’s Songs for Seeds music class.  Lil’ tykes singing The Alphabet Song or The Lion Sleeps Tonight? GULP!

- Birth stories.  Other people’s too!  But the most damage occurs when I’m looking at pictures from Big Bub’s and thinking back to that special day when he introduced himself to the world.

- Public speaking and nerves.  Occasionally, (mostly in work-related situations but not always) if I’m speaking to a group, I’ll get flushed and nervous and feel my eyes start to water for no conscious reason.

- Arguments with Glamadad.  Crying is only one of the physical reactions.  Others include, spitting fire and blowing steam out of my ears.

Might my hormones be out of balance?  Will the imbalance last forever (or until menopause once again rocks the boat that is my endocrine system)?

Sorry Frankie but big girls do cry!  Especially this one.

MOMS WHO ROCK | DEBRA WATTENBERG, MD

I had the great opportunity to interview Debra Wattenberg, MD, a top New York City dermatologist, wife and mother of 3, and Director of Scientific Affairs for The Oxalosis & Hyperoxaluria Foundation, for the first of Glamamom’s Moms Who Rock feature.

Dr. Wattenberg makes regular appearances on The Today Show, CNN, LX New York and The Mike and Juliet Show and her magazine and newspaper credits include: Glamour, Good Housekeeping, Oprah, Cosmopolitan, Teen, Glamour, W Magazine, Woman’s Day, Allure, New Woman, Men’s Health and The Daily News.

(1) Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with Glamamom. I think readers will be very interested in gaining insight from such an accomplished woman as you, especially your take on maintaining a work/life balance. Some days, I forget to feed the dog. How do you balance it all and still make time for yourself?

Being organized is the key to getting everything done. Organization is crucial. I don’t leave anything for tomorrow that I can do today. I also multi-task all day long. I make appointments for the kids between patients, I eat while opening the mail. I return all calls immediately so that nothing piles up. In addition, I think it’s key to have a very supportive husband who participates in raising the children. That’s probably the biggest asset.

(2) What about motherhood surprised you most?

I am always surprised at how much fun I have spending time with my children. All 3 of my kids are interesting to be with and I love watching each of them develop into adults. Each stage of life brings new and exciting challenges but also such interesting and fun times. I am also surprised at how often I sound like my own mother. I catch myself and laugh!

(3) You manage a successful medical dermatology practice, skincareRX. Skin care and anti-aging are super hot topics right now. In a society obsessed with youth, what’s your stance on anti-aging cosmetic procedures?

A good skincare routine should start young and then be adjusted as you age. I am a big fan of anti-aging cosmetic procedures. Not all procedures are for everyone so it’s really important to see a professional that can discuss your issues and determine the best procedure for your skin. Chemical peels, Botox, Restylane and Juviderm are all great procedures but they are not for everyone and they will not correct every skin issue.

(4) What’s your most important skincare tip?

Wear sunscreen every day.

(5) If you walked into a pharmacy with only $5, what personal care item would you buy?

Cetaphil cleansing lotion or Aquaphor healing ointment. Cetaphil is a great cleansing moisturizing product that can also remove makeup. Aquaphor can be used as a moisturizer as well as a lip balm and can be put on cuts and scrapes.

(6) Was it always your dream to be a doctor? Why dermatology?

Yes, I always wanted to be a physician. My grandmother was sick when I was growing up and I was inspired to become a doctor back then. I chose dermatology because it allowed me to work with people of all ages and combine medicine and surgery. I really enjoy performing minor surgical procedures as well as diagnosing medical issues by looking at the skin.

(7) What is the genesis of The Oxalosis & Hyperoxaluria Foundation and what has been the most rewarding experience from your affiliation?

My son was born with a rare genetic kidney and liver disease. He is missing an enzyme in his liver that allows the kidney to breakdown calcium and oxalate. As a result, he develops kidney stones and has recurrent kidney issues.

My husband and I become very involved with the organization when our son was diagnosed. Since then, we have helped to raise money and awareness for the disease and the organization funds the majority of research for the disease. Helping the families of children with the disease to understand that they are not alone is the most rewarding part of being a part of the OHF family. It is very scary to have your child diagnosed with anything but a rare disease can be so much more frightening because no one has ever heard of it. We try to help the families understand and take control.

(8) What are the 3 most important values that you hope to instill in your children?

Honesty, integrity, and compassion.

(9) What’s on your “Bucket List” / what are your future goals?

I would like to travel more, specifically in Africa, Asia, and India; become fluent in a foreign language; write a book; and host my own TV program.

(10) What’s your favorite place to eat in NYC?

Anywhere downtown. I love to try new restaurants every time I go out. I don’t like to repeat unless it’s fantastic. Some of my favorites include: Morandi, The Waverly Inn, and Minetta Tavern.

DRESS YOU UP IN MY LOVE

Vilebrequin’s Like Father, Like Son matching bathing suit trunks are ridiculously cute but I like to coordinate with Big Bub too.

That’s the Kara Janx Wrap Skirt (on me, not Big Bub).

Congratulations to Noah David on his baptism and a big thank you to his parents, Jessica and Andrew, for the incredible reception.

YOU LIKE ME, YOU REALLY LIKE ME!

Or you think my blog is pretty, which is even better (it’s all the pictures of meat, right?)

Thank you Shelli from Style Ingenuity and Classy Career Girl, two great blogs that I read regularly, for bestowing Glamamom with this honor!

As part of my acceptance, I must divulge 5 secrets about Glamamom.

Hmm, secrets?  That’s tough.  If I were the secretive type, I probably wouldn’t be blabbing all over this blog, Facebook, and Twitter.  And my real secrets, well, they would land me in jail or something so you’re never getting those.

I guess these are decently (gasp)-worthy:
(1) I never consciously read a blog before starting Glamamom.
(2) Occasionally, I’ll vote for Glamamom as a Top Mommy Blog. Okay, every day, if I remember.
(3) Another NYC mommy blogger has snubbed me a few times so I’m plotting revenge.
(4) I wanted to submit to the Project Mom Casting but totally pussied out and couldn’t get my act together.
(5) I started writing Glamamom because I wanted a platform to begin discussions like the Hot Topics segment on The View but rarely have the time to write as meaningfully as I want.

I’m not getting any more awards, am I?

Oh, and I pass the crown to these fabulous and inspirational blogs:

PETER LUGER

BlogHers, if you have time to spare, Peter Luger Steakhouse is so worth the trip to Brooklyn.

Johnny Carson said Luger was the best dinner of my life.

I’ve got a lot more living to do to declare such a bold statement but it’s definitely a contender.

KARA JANX | STELLA & DOT TRUNK SHOW

This evening my cuz and I dropped by the Garment District for fashion designer & Glamamom Kara Janx’s trunk show with boutique jewelry designer Stella & Dot

You may remember Kara as one of the finalists of Project Runway‘s Season 2?  Well, she’s parlayed that experience into a much-deserved, successful career designing gorgeously tailored, colorful cocktail dresses {photo via Merci New York}:

Kara was a lovely hostess and even demonstrated for us the many ways to wear my new purchase, the Maya Silk Wrap Skirt (pictured first above) in canary yellow.  It’s one of her most versatile pieces and can be worn as both a high and low-waisted skirt and two different style cocktail dresses.  Here it is again wrapped up like a big present:

Stella & Dot stylist Beth Solomon came down from Boston to showcase their Spring/Summer collection.  I’ve been ogling it online so it was nice to see the pieces up-close and personal:
Cousin Kat contemplating earrings:
I also got this S&D necklace (it’s my birthday next week so I have to wish myself a happy one ;)
Thank you Kara Janx and Beth Solomon, I can’t wait to wear my new stuff!  And Cousin Kat, for dinner and the sweaty laughs.

PRETTIEST PUP ON THE BLOCK

Mapuche may be macho but he sure is pretty.  People often stop us to marvel at how handsome he is, despite the fact that the baby is usually alongside.  New Yorkers are serious about their pets.  I don’t get offended though.  I may have been like that before I had a kid.

The heat has been relentless this summer so it was high time Mapu got a haircut.

We’ve tried a couple of groomers but my favorite is Towne House Grooming.  It’s not a fancy pet spa (nor should it be) but it’s run by animal people, you know, the kind that tell you your dog is breathtaking while you’re holding an infant.  I’m kidding, they love Big Bub but you know what I mean.

Other than that, I really like that both the grooming areas and holding pen are completely visible.  Their prices are good too.

Mapu’s really excited about his puppy cut…
Well, Big Bub is anyhow…

Towne House’s super sweet owner, Elly, gave Mapu Big Bub us a cupcake squeeze toy and the boys spent the rest of the afternoon fighting over it…

Mine!
No mine!
Yours!
Miiiiiine!
Mapu’s enjoying both his new haircut and cupcake a whole lot more now that Big Bub is fast asleep.

{WINNER} STELLA & DOT $50 GIFT CARD

CONGRATULATIONS Autum H. who wrote: So hard to choose but I would have to put it towards the Cortez cuff!

Stella & Dot just unveiled their Fall/Winter Collection last week.  Perhaps a change of heart?

Thanks Stella & Dot Diva and everyone who participated!

IN MY MAKE-UP BAG

With a moniker like Glamamom, you’d think I was totally product-obsessed.  But the truth is, I hardly ever buy new beauty products.  Occasionally, I’ll get roped into a visit to the make-up counter with a girlfriend or have a moment of weakness at Duane Reade but for the most part, I figure, if it ain’t broke…?

Tons of samples and gifts are taking up precious space in my bathroom drawers but will likely never see the light of day.

Here’s exactly what’s in my make-up bag.  To replace one of these sacred items, it’d have to make me look like…Naomi Campbell.  Now I may act like her sometimes but…hmph, good luck with that
