Beauty Buzz | 6 Baking Soda Beauty Tips

Last Wednesday, I spent a blissful day with Cousin Kat.  We shared the morning at a live taping of the season finale of The Martha Stewart Show with a performance from Rufus and Martha Wainwright, enjoyed a cocktail lunch at Elmo, then headed downtown to SoHo for some shopping and afternoon tea at the Crosby Street Hotel courtesy of ARM & HAMMER®.

We were blown away by the baking soda beauty tips we learned that I’ve added the all-natural, $1 carton of baking soda to my list of must-have beauty products and had to share:

Facial Scrub & Body Exfoliant
For smooth, radiant skin, make a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1-part water.  Rub in a circular motion to exfoliate and rinse clean.  Or, add a pinch or two of baking soda to your facial cleanser. Gentle enough for daily use.  I’ll be using this technique before visiting Gotham Glow.

Hair Product Build-up Removal
Sprinkle a small amount (quarter-size) of baking soda into your palm along with your favorite shampoo.  Shampoo as usual and rinse thoroughly.  ARM & HAMMER® helps remove the residue that styling products leave behind so your hair is more manageable.

Soothing Bath Soak
For a relaxing ending to a long day by adding 1/2 cup of baking soda to your bath for a relaxing and refreshing soak.  Your skin will feel silky smooth.

Home Pedicure Foot Soak
Start your home pedicure by dissolving three tablespoons of baking soda in a basin of warm water and soak feet, then gently scrub with a paste of baking soda.

Pearly Whites
For a gleaming smile, brush teeth with baking soda.  Just sprinkle baking soda into your palm, dip a damp toothbrush into it, and brush.  For a refreshing mouth rinse, use 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water.  Swish solution through teeth and rinse.

Natural Deodorant
Dust baking soda under arms as needed to feel fresh all day.  The baking soda actually absorbs odors instead of just covering them up.

I’ve been using ARM & HAMMER® on my face, body, and hair and it’s seriously as good as any more expensive product I’ve ever used.  I also tried it on my teeth but I think it’s too soon to notice a difference.

You can see the full list of baking soda solutions here, including clever ways to clean up after the kids, and download coupons here.

Do you have an inexpensive beauty secret?

{I received complimentary product from ARM & HAMMER® for consideration.  I was not compensated for this post.}

I misread that first paragraph and got all excited for a second because I thought you had lunch WITH Elmo… A little baking soda in the diaper pail helps with odors, too. :)

How cool is that! I had NO idea there were this many other uses for the stuff.

  6. You and your cousin look so gorgeous and fresh-faced in that pic!

Those are some neat tips – who knew Baking Soda could be used for all of those things?!!

My inexpensive beauty secret is Vaseline – it’s the perfect makeup remover (esp. pesky eye makeup) and also great for moisturizing those rough/dry areas like elbows and knees.

  7. So….I just did the baking soda exfoliation. I came by early for a quick sec and saw the tip, so when I hopped into the shower I just dumped a few tablespoons in a cup and then worked a small amount into my cleanser. Hello magic and yet super cheap fix!

Just had to stop in again to tell you! xo

  8. I love that picture of you and cousin Kat! Beautiful. And… wow!!!! Didn’t know that baking soda does all those things. I knew about the teeth whitening, but all the other beauty tips… NICE. I’m going to try the facial because after staying up late this last week of classes, my dry and tired looking face is going to need it. And I’m going to try the shampoo thing too. My hairdresser will be surprised when I bring baking soda along for my wash and blow out. LOL.

  9. Some of this I knew, but the deodorant? I had no clue!

My still swears by baking soda not only for beauty but also for cleaning. I have to say though, I was always a bit hesistant on jumping on the bandwagon. I guess I might have to give it a try!

I love baking soda! I use it for my teeth especially. You can also sprinkle baking soda in your laundry as its washing. It eliminates odor.

Baking soda has to be the most amazing product ever – so many uses from beauty, to cleaning and deodorizing.

  27. I never thought to use it as an exfoliant! I usually use corn meal with honey, but I’m going to give this a shot now too. Thanks!

  28. love this post! i just bought 4 boxes of baking soda (i needed more items to even out my item to coupon ratio in a transaction)

  29. I grew up using baking soda as toothpaste, and didn’t have a cavity til I was in my 20s using fancy toothpaste. I had no idea you could use it for all that other stuff.

  32. Very cool! And you both look great (although I don’t know if you had had the chance to try it all yet). I’ve heard that baking soda can clean silver by lining a bowl with aluminum foil and pouring in boiling water.
