Hopefully all the newly minted ING New York City Marathon 2011 finishers are recovered and those who cursed the streets of New York and swore off marathons forever are now singing its praises and plotting their next big challenge. Pain is temporary but the title “marathon runner,” is forever.
This year, the New York City Marathon, which combines two of my greatest loves, running and the City of New York, met my soul.
While the elite runners were making their way across the Verrazano Bridge from Staten Island into Brooklyn, Sebastian prepared to cheer them on. Excitedly hopping on the traaaayn!, we then headed uptown to meet my friend and fellow marathon runner Erin, at one of the most dreaded stretches of the course, the Fifth Avenue incline just before entering into Central Park towards the finish line.
I know first hand how much the extra encouragement means and the smiles, thumbs up, and high-fives we received, confirm that we hit the right spot.
Sebastian probably won’t remember a thing about that afternoon but hopefully he’ll grow up to understand how crucial perseverance, dedication, and hard work are to one’s character.
If his strong will is any indication, I doubt this will be his last marathon.

Awww…. I’m so glad you took him to cheer the runners on. He may not remember, but it’s still a great experience, and you’ve got pictures to prove it. I love his little sign — super cute! And yes, dedication, perseverance, and hard work — that’s half the battle right there.

If he was cheering me on from the sidelines I might be able to keep going! I’d have to fight the urge to stop and pinch those cheeks though. So cute!

I love the picture of him decorating his sign with stickers. He looks so earnest! I think those runners are amazing. I can’t stand to even run down the street. What a fun experience for Sebastian. Even if he doesn’t remember it, I am sure he loved the energy of the day
