A PLACE FOR MY YOUNG ARTIST

In early October, the Children’s Museum of the Arts officially relocated to its new, 10,000 square foot location on Charlton Street in Hudson Square.  I’d been dying to take Bubba to check it out but there was such a mad dash leading up to the holidays we didn’t make it down for a visit until yesterday.

I was hesitant to go during school break, having learned my lesson at the Museum of Natural History, around Easter I think it was, but we arrived at 10:45 for the WEE Arts drop-in class ($22) designed for children under 5 and it was comfortably crowded.  The bi-level classroom space has high ceilings and so many different tables, nooks and stations, no one area got too congested.

The staff was the most kid-friendly I think I’ve encountered in all of New York City.  I was having heart palpitations watching paint splatter onto the walls and sand being poured all over the floor but they didn’t miss a beat.  It appeared as though they were having as much fun as the kids, maybe even more.

The WEE class is roughly 45 minutes of open exploration of tables topped with materials ranging from pipe cleaners and play-doh to watercolor and finger paints, with approximately 15 minutes of a sing-a-long (complete with musical instruments) and story time.  After class we were able to roam the rest of the museum which boasts exhibit space, a yoga ball pit, slide, music lounge, fine arts studio, and clay bar.

Now I’ve been to many types of bars over the years but never a clay bar.  I had to be that cheesy mom and order a Cosmo just to see if the bartender would indulge me but she only sculpted us a doggie.  Anyway, you must check out the Children’s Museum of the Arts for yourself.  We’re already planning a return visit.

MODE MONDAY: PINK CHRISTMAS

[coat: vintage cabi c/o / necklace: bauble bar / shoes: old cole haan (similar) / tights: gap /watch: michael kors / bow bracelet: c/o jewelmint / bangle: accessories swap / bag: fendi borrowed from my cuz]

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday! I need to keep this brief since I’m taking a much-needed social media break. Huz and I have the entire day to ourselves!

We spent Christmas Eve and Christmas day on Long Island with family. Cousin Kat and I popped outside on Saturday to take pictures, which we joked is a lot like how we used to “play” when we were kids. It was mild enough to wear this pretty pink coat I got at CAbi Scoop this summer.

Did you dress up this weekend or for comfort?

PEACE | JOY | LOVE

May all the beauty of this holiday season be yours.

SPLURGE VS. STEAL

SearsStyle challenged me to find the best “steals” among its collections this season.

Leo has joked on many occasions that I can spot the most expensive thing in a store so I generally have a good eye for this sorta thing.  Do you?

Guess the “splurge vs. steal” among these statements cuffs, capes, and toggle coats:

1. Dannijo Molli ($485) vs. Kardashian Kollection Metal Cuff Bracelet With Metal And Acrylic Stone Snake ($14.40)
2. UK Style by French Connection Women’s Wool Blend Cape ($59.99, originally $160) vs. ERMANNO SCERVINO Black Angora Trench Style Cape ($1,178, originally $2,455)
3. Burberry Brit Fur-Hood Quilted Toggle Coat ($995) vs. UK Style by French Connection Women’s Hooded Toggle Coat ($63.99, originally $160)

Did you guess them all correctly?

LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD {SPONSORED}

[boots & necklace: c/o sofia by sofia vergara for kmart / blazer: zara / pants: old banana republic / shirt: old behnaz sarafpour (via gilt) / clutch: old botkier (via gilt) /cuff: c/o kara ross / bracelets: c/o stella & dot, vintage, accessories swap / watch: michael kors ]

Looking good and feeling good go hand and hand for me so I try my best not to sacrifice style for motherhood.  While it’s never been more challenging to find the time to do things for myself like exercise, shop or take a long shower (by myself), it’s easier than ever to find fabulous and affordable clothing and accessories.  With all the designer collaborations, there’s a steal for every splurge and having it delivered right to my door makes it oh so easy to embrace the latest trends.

Kmart invited me to pick a couple of items from the new Sofia by Sofia Vergara Collection.  The pieces are super sexy and designed to celebrate a woman’s body.  I chose these over-the-knee platform boots ($29.99) and hammered gold statement necklace ($18.99) because I think they’d fit seamlessly into my wardrobe and be fun for the holidays. The boots are surprisingly comfortable and make quite a statement.

What do you think?  Have you seen the collection yet?

MODE MONDAY: CAPED CRUSADER

 [cape: from argentina / flats: c/o sole society / scarf: c/o h&m / winter leggings & tee: american apparel / blazer: madewell / shirt: f21 / bag: bottega veneta /ring & earrings: h. stern /sunnies: c/o foster grant (similar) / nails: essie, chinchilly / lips: mac satin, mystic]

It’s officially winter in Manhattan but I refuse to pull out the puffer just yet.  I picked up this suede cape while in Argentina and as long as I layer underneath, I can keep warm and still look presentable.  They have so many unique leather goods in Argentina, if you’re into that sort of thing…which I am.

The flats are from a membership site called Sole Society.  Have you heard of it?  I went to a party last week hosted by Barbara Jones and Catherine Connors to check out the designs.  They’re really cute and super affordable ($49.95 – $69.95). You take one of those fun style quizzes to determine your “Style Bio” using preferred celebrities, runway looks, and style images as a guide. I always love to see how they classify my style.  At the beginning of each month, you get a fresh collection of shoes in your “closet,” based on your personal style choices. Anyway, I got to pick a pair and chose these smoking flats, which I love and know I’ll get a ton of use out of.

Have a glamorous week!

IT’S GOOD TO BE BUBBA

Sorry I’ve been MIA lately.  Between work, the holidays, and Bubba’s social calendar, I haven’t had much personal/blog time other than to post some sponsored giveaways, which isn’t a such a bad way to kick off the holidays but certainly not as cathartic as the regular tales and updates.  I haven’t even had the chance to go through our photos from Buenos Aires yet.  They’re mostly family shots, since that was the main purpose of our visit but I was hoping to share some of the many dulce de leche faces of Sebastian.

On a positive note, I’m proud to report that our tree is standing proud, thanks to Uncle Jeff who again selected us a stunner. It’s only 9 feet (as opposed to this beast from last year) but much more manageable.  I didn’t once fear plummeting to my death while decorating it.  Oh, and Balthazar is on patrol like CHiPs.  Which reminds me…have you read this post about those competitive Elf on the Shelf Mommies?  Absolutely hilarious!

Our holiday cards are finally out for delivery too.  Of course it was raining the day I scheduled Carissa so we only had a few minutes outside.  None of the photos felt special enough to stand alone so we chose a three-photo card instead of just one.  A huge thanks to everyone who voted on the card design but in the end, the photos themselves determined the winner.  It’ll be posted next week and I promise it’s super cute.

Now onto, Where in Manhattan is Bubba?

We visited Macy’s Santaland again.  I learned a lot from last year’s experience and decided to go early in the season.  We zoomed through Santaland as expected and Bubba loved it   The big guy himself?  Not so much.  The only redeeming thing about the photo is that I’m not in it.  Although I did wash my hair and practice folding my hands in my lap, just in case.

Bubba also experienced bowling for the first time at a holiday party with Santa’s Hideout, a really cool, parent-controlled wishlist/letters to Santa site.  The party was at Bowlmore Lanes, which I hadn’t visited since partying with PeeWee.  Not only was it Sebastian’s first time bowling but he also had his first ever candy apple (huge success, obviously) and got his face painted like a puppy.

Given Sebastian’s affinity for candy, I was all over Taste Buds’ Gingerbread House class.  In less than an hour, he consumed more candy than he’s ever eaten in his little life and the smirk on his face lasted well into the sleepless night.  The “class” was crowded and is on the pricey side but I would definitely return next year and for some of the other classes.

Then there are the shows.  Last weekend we saw Berenstain Bears Live at the Marjorie S. Dean Little Theatre and today we saw the Three Bears Holiday Bash at the Swedish Cottage Marrionette Theater in Central Park.  Bears bears bears!  Berenstain Bears was a little too country and old fashion for us city folk but Bubba got to meet the bears after the performance and again had his face painted, which was a highlight.  The Three Bear Holiday Bash was a real treat for everyone.  The puppet show tells the stories of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza, and has a lot of interactive components. The cottage is warm and cozy and the stories are fast-paced and engaging.  The staff was super sweet and accommodating too.

Next on our list is the Holiday Train Show.  NYers, have you been?  My SIL and nephew are visiting for New Year’s so we’re waiting for them to join us.

Other than that, I’m just trying to take it all in.  For the first time, Sebastian can appreciate the magic of the holidays and his wonderment is contagious.

How has your holiday season been so far?

AMERICAN LIVING | MADE FOR GIVING {SPONSORED}

Leo read the American Living post about the flannel I chose for him so I had to give it up a little earlier than planned. But he liked it so much, I’m going to order him a few more. Oh, and this faux fur vest for myself.  Because I work so hard and am so under appreciated, wink.

If you’re still stumped for gift ideas, have a look at what my fellow bloggers are gifting their loved ones.  And don’t worry, you still have time. If you order by this Friday, your package will arrive in time for Christmas.

Are you finished with your holiday shopping or still at it (like me)?

GLAM GIFT IDEA FOR THE PET LOVER

I won a giveaway over at Dim Sum Debutante to have a photograph of Mapuche painted on canvas by Martha Osborne of Martha’s Pet Portraits. She creates heirloom quality oil portraits of pets from her studio in Tennessee and will ship a custom painting anywhere in the world. All you have to do is email her.

We’re so thrilled with the result, I just had to share. I’m sure it’s too late to have one finished by Christmas/Hanukkah but having a painting of your beloved pet commissioned is a fabulous gift and totally worth the wait!

Now, where should we hang Mapu?

PANTENE TWEETUP & YEAR SUPPLY {GIVEAWAY} {SPONSORED}

Remember when I cut 10+ inches of my hair to donate to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program last year?  I told you I had plenty to spare and as you can see, it’s well on its way to its prior length.

But since becoming a mom, my hair has changed quite a bit, from its texture to how it behaves when the weather transitions from one season to the next.
