MODE MONDAY: STRUT | THE FASHIONABLE MOM SHOW

What do you do if you feel under-represented in the world of fashion?

If you’re The Moms, Audrey McClelland and Vera Sweeney of Getting Gorgeous, and Holly Pavlika of MOMentum/Big Fuel, you join forces with Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, Director of Fashion at Lincoln Center, to produce and star in your own fashion runway show during New York Fashion Week.

The day after the lights went out under the tents, 19 social media moms sashayed in the first ever Strut: The Fashionable Show, showcasing accessible spring designs available in stores now.  Supermodel Iman hosted, 8-year old music prodigy DJ Fulano directed the music, and stylist June Ambrose (whose amazing work I saw at Catherine Malandrino last season) led the show at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center:

I was fortunate to be among the Clorox-sponsored Twitter-azzi, live-Tweeting the action.  Witnessing the amazing personalities of each mom beaming down the runway was truly inspiring.  There are so many stylish and affordable clothing options for women of all shapes and sizes these days, all it takes is a little inspiration and effort.  Thanks to the Strut Moms for demonstrating both.

My photos only represent a fraction of the looks showcased.  In case you missed it, you can watch the entire presentation here.

NYFW: LIA SOPHIA SOCIAL FASHION SUITE AT THE EMPIRE HOTEL

lia sophia took Fashion Week by storm with its 3-day Social Fashion™ lounge at the Empire Hotel hosting celebrities, editors, stylists and industry notables to check out top picks from the Spring/Summer catalog and preview Zingara, the new Red Carpet Collection™.

Monday morning, lia sophia founder Elena Kiam hosted a breakfast alongside Jeannie Mai, global fashion expert and host of How Do I Look? on the Style Network, and Dani Stahl, head designer of lia sophia’s Red Carpet Collection, a style consultant on E!’s Scouted and editor-at-large for Nylon magazine, for an intimate group of fashion and style bloggers. It was a fabulous opportunity to get to know the lia sophia brand better and learn the latest fashion jewelry trends.

Elena is a huge inspiration to me.  We share a very similar professional background and commiserated over long hours and sacrifice but agree working hard and acquiring a skill set for women in their twenties is invaluable.  One of my favorite sound bytes from the breakfast was Elena explaining, “A true measure of success isn’t just monetary. It’s when you’re in a position to help other women,” which lia sophia does inherently through its direct sales model and ongoing support of Dress for Success.  You can see highlights from the event here (and catch me grinning ear to ear around 2:49).

Some tips from the experts:
- According to Dani Stahl, you shouldn’t fear mixing metals, something I personally struggle with. “There’s no rule book about gold and silver.”
- Jeannie Mae suggests treating statement jewelry like a centerpiece on a table and working hair and make-up around it.
- Embrace color!
- And what five pieces should be in every Glamamom’s jewelry box?  I asked the ladies and they all agreed: a pair of hoop earrings, studs, a cocktail ring, a cuff, and an everyday necklace.

The average price of a piece of lia sophia jewelry is about $50 but each year the company designs higher-priced Red Carpet Collections™ geared towards celebs, taste-makers, and editorial features.  Here are some of my favorite pieces from Zingara.  Meaning “female gypsy” in Italian, the collection is filled with ornate statement pieces with a worldly, bohemian chic vibe:

NYFW: ALICE + OLIVIA BY STACEY BENDET FALL 2012

alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet’s Fall 2012 collection is a sexy and playful mix of vintage-inspired patterns and materials with a focus on outerwear and knit dressing:

2012 is the year of the glamorous  dinner party for designer Stacey Bendet and the “Lolita-inspired” collection spotlights intricate textures of rich boucle, edgy leather, jacquard embroidery, brocades, tapestries, and lush furs laid on custom prints. The fashion week presentation was held at one of my favorite lofts in Chelsea, illuminated by tables of candlelight and a modern mix of clothing in bold jewel tones including: emerald green, ruby red, midnight blue, plum, metallics, and Bendet’s signature black and white color-blocking.

Ms. Bendet launched alice + olivia in 2002, 3 years after graduating my class at Penn. What started as her personal quest to create flattering pants has since grown into the uber-glamorous, full line women’s ready-to-wear collection it is today. Not to mention, she’s a Glamamom to 2 small daughters, Eloise and Scarlet. I’ve been a huge fan of the brand for years and conveniently used to work a few blocks from the Bryant Park store, which was oh-so-convenient. The clothes are always so current and youthful, perfect for any fabulous occasion.

COLORED DENIM IS BACK FOR SPRING {SPONSORED}

Two of the runway shows I saw during Fashion Week featured spring fashions available in stores now: Rock & Republic for Kohl’s and Strut, The Fashionable Moms Show.  It’s abundantly clear that colored denim is back again this season.

I’m a skinny jeans girl so I love Rock & Republic’s Hamburg Skinny Crop Jeans in White and Cherry Bomb. We received a cobalt pair in our gift bags but I don’t see them online yet.

Colored jeans are great wardrobe addition that can easily be paired with flats or wedges depending on the occasion and that pop of color is everything!

Have you embraced the colored denim trend yet?

MODE MONDAY: FALL FASHION WEEK {THE REST}

I’m so behind with my fashion week coverage!  I have no idea how everyone (ehem, Nicole, Tami, Yakini) raced around the city by day and still had the wear-with-all to edit photos and post by night.  Hats off to you. Fortunately/unfortunately my coverage will be extended another week here at Glamamom.  Here’s some of what I wore the rest of New York Fashion Week:

Breakfast with lia sophia founder Elena Kiam, stylists Jeannie Mae and Dani Stahl, and Tami! to preview the latest collection, Zingara (Photo via Talking with Tami. No, we didn’t coordinate):

NYFW: DIET PEPSI STYLE STUDIO

One of the more unique presentations I attended last week is the “Diet Pepsi Style Studio” hosted by Barney’s Simon Doonan.  With set design by huz Jonathan Adler, complete with a runway of Diet Pepsi cans, the show featured four regional up-and-coming designers (Genoveva Christoff/Columbus, OH, Rae Marie/Denver, CO, Elise Bergman/Chicago, IL, Shirin Askari/Dallas, TX).

Each designer showcased their hometown perspective in three themed fall looks to an intimate audience that included: Kristin Chenoweth, Debra Messing, who I’m loving in Smash, Mary-Kate Olsen, Kelly Rutherford, Miss J, Jay Manuel, and that “is he gay/isn’t he gay guy” from Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

It was standing room and tough to photograph the individual looks but I found this great video recap of the event:

ROCK & REPUBLIC FOR KOHL’S DEBUTS AT NEW YORK FASHION WEEK {PART II}

Want to know what all the Rock & Republic for Kohl’s buzz is about? Here’s a fabulous video montage of the debut runway show at New York Fashion Week last week. Can you spot me Tweeting behind Tinsley Mortimer and Kelly Bensimon around 1:06?

In my recap earlier this week, I showed pieces of the women’s collection. Well, the men’s is just as cool and casual (did you see Ed Westwick’s bum?).

Guests received amazing gift bags for attending the show, which included both men’s and women’s clothes. Leo wore R&R jeans, the tee, and hoodie the very next day! I told him he has to take a Mode Monday pic so stay tuned.

Can you see your guy wearing R&R?

NYFW: TADASHI SHOJI FALL 2012 RTW

My first show under the tents this season was Tadashi Shoji’s Fall/Winter 2012 Runway Show, quite fitting since I’m a huge fan of his wearable, accessibly-priced dresses.

While the spring collection is fit for a garden party, dominated by ruffled pastels and jewel tones, the inspiration for the opulent fall/winter 2012 collection is the Golden Age of Shanghai, with rich, dramatic velvet, lace, chiffon, and silk drop-waist dresses, column gowns, and extended hemlines in brilliant colors of marina and seagrass, and classic black, red, and gold.  Here are my favorites:

The still photos really don’t do the collection justice.  They moved so beautifully down the runway oozing effortless glamor with their modesty and classic silhouettes.

Real clothes for real women.  Always a bonus at fashion week.

Can you imagine yourself somewhere fabulous in one of these?

MODE MONDAY: FALL FASHION WEEK {SO FAR}

It’s been one of those whirlwind weeks and I’ve been running all over the city for fashion week and toy fair events, trying to find the time to post about them, and you know…be a mom, run a business, and all that jazz. I was sidelined this weekend with a cold but plan to get back in the game today for lia sophia, Emilio Cavallini, The Cambridge Satchel Company, and alice + olivia.

Here’s what I wore last week…

Day 0: Lunch at Chelsea Market with Nicole from Momtrends, popping into IFB Conference, The Red Dress Collection, and dinner at Soho House with Glam Media (pictured with with Yakini from Reality TV Fashion and Christine from Tineey):

[shearling: old from the grand bazaar istanbul / scarf: old anthro / pants: rag & bone / blouse: kosiuko argentina / boots: dv by dolce vita c/o tjmaxx / bag: chloe (similar) / watch: michael kors]

ROCK & REPUBLIC FOR KOHL’S DEBUTS AT NEW YORK FASHION WEEK {PART I}

Hammerstein Ballroom was buzzing again Friday night as press and celebrity guests braved a chilly February night for a first look at Rock & Republic’s reincarnated apparel and footwear exclusively for Kohl’s.

“It’s the deal of the century,” remarked housewife Kelly Bensimon as she walked the red carpet. “You can pick up these amazing jeans that used be more than $200 for a fraction of the price.”

Fellow Glam Media Rock & Republic reporters and I were treated to an intimate evening of cocktails and music, complete with A-list fans like Zoe Saldana, Ashlee Simpson, Mena Suvari, Molly Sims, Penn Badgley, and Ed Westwick, sitting front row for the main event, a combined men’s and women’s runway show.

R&R’s signature jeans and cuffed shorts were paired with studded tanks, sequin tops, and embellished blazers. I love the rock and roll vibe of the styling with hats and headscarves:

Stay tuned for more pictures of the men’s collection and the glam team later this week!
