To celebrate the sea services, New York City has been hosting Fleet Week every year in late May spanning Memorial Day Weekend since the early eighties.
It’s impossible not to notice the influx of young men in uniform strolling the city as if it were a military port. My boat/plane/car/train-obsessed toddler has opened my eyes to a whole new host of sights and sounds and this year we made our way up along the glistening Hudson River (stopping at the new Stonyfield Cafe at Chelsea Piers for lunch) to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum for the festivities.
We hadn’t yet taken Sebastian aboard and weren’t sure if it was age-appropriate but once we got up to the Flight and Hangar Decks it was a battle to get him to leave.
Exploreaum Hall on the Hangar Deck has 13,000 square feet of 18 fully-interactive exhibits focused on the Intrepid’s history and four educational themes of water, space, air and life at sea. Perfect for the toddler set and beyond:
If all else fails, there are vending machines throughout that are apparently quite entertaining for first-timers.
It’s also important to note that the line for tickets looked to be about 30-60 minutes long but there was no wait whatsoever for advanced purchases and will-call. I guess the people waiting didn’t have Internet access on their cell phones? In any case, it was a good reminder to purchase tickets in advance. City attractions are always packed on weekends and holidays.
Sebastian woke up the following morning and asked if we could “go back on the boat” but I told him the Intrepid is like Christmas, once year. I have to admit though, I had a really good time too. Maybe we’ll be back sooner.
Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum: West 46th Street at 12th Avenue, New York, NY 10036 (212- 245-0072). Monday – Friday: 10 AM to 5 PM; Saturday, Sunday & Holidays: 10 AM to 6 PM.

And glad to hear Sebastian enjoyed it so much. Something about little kids and boats/trains. It’s so cute to see their faces light up

LOL at it’s like Christmas. We missed out on Fleet Week celebrations this week, but there’s an exhibit at the Intrepid that I’ve been meaning to get Aiden to before it goes bye-bye in July.
