Phew.  What a week it’s been.

When I heard rumblings about a hurricane headed towards the East Coast, I didn’t give them much credence since Hurricane Irene two summers ago never materialized into the catastrophic storm it was predicted to be.  That seems so foolish now.

Our power was cut on Monday evening, before the storm even hit New York.  Fortunately, we were able to find a hotel in midtown to bring the boys until our power was restored on Friday night.  It was one of the scariest and most uncomfortable times I’ve experienced living in NYC.  Information was slow to trickle in and it was days before we became fully aware of Sandy’s effects.

Despite being displaced for much of the week and coming home to a basement filled with smelly Hudson River water that damaged our boiler and knocked out our heat, we’re the lucky ones.  My parents still don’t have power on Long Island, my aunt’s house was severely damaged, and my brother can’t get fuel for either his car or his truck to get back to work but they too consider themselves lucky.  People died.  People are homeless.  People are cold and hungry.

I know it’s difficult to understand how dire the situation is unless you’re here witnessing or suffering the devastation first hand.  We all want to settle back into our routines and focus on the happy occasions to come but please know that even though the media coverage is lessening, there are so many people whose lives have been forever changed and still need aid.

We’re working with two great charities on the ground here in New York worth highlighting:

Baby Buggy®, who I featured last month for its partnership with Rebecca Minkoff and Bravado Designs, is collecting coats for families in need.  Mail to: Baby Buggy, 306 West 37th Street, 8th Floor, NY, NY 10018.  Include your name and return address for a tax letter.  You can also ship much-needed items like diapers and wipes straight from Diapers.com to Baby Buggy or if in the NYC area, Momtrends is collecting donations at its office in DUMBO.  Contact Nicole for address/more info.

For manufacturers and retailers of apparel and home fashion, Fashion Delivers works with the fashion industry to provide new merchandise to local agencies to distribute as needed.  They’re currently collecting for Sandy victims and anticipate the most needed items to be: shirts, pants, socks, underwear, sweatshirts, blankets, and towels.  Click here for donation info.

One participant linking up with #MondayMingle this week will have a cash donation made on her behalf to both Baby Buggy and Fashion Delivers. UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who linked up for this special Monday Mingle! The donation will be made in honor of Chasing Davies.

Have a good week.

  1. That’s awesome that you’re working with those charities. Ugh, can’t believe your power was all that long. That’s really hard, particularly with two babies in the house. All I can think about is stored breastmilk or formula bottles in the fridge. Good that you all were able to find a close hotel, albeit inconvenient.

We were among the lucky ones too, as Harlem wasn’t hit all too hard. However, the gas situation has been difficult. For the first time since the hurricane, Derek was finally able to put a few gallons in the car. He waited on line for 6 hours, and finally made it to the front before they ran out. So grateful! We had literally been trapped in the house, no way to get to work either.

I totally had the same thoughts prior to Sandy arriving (based on our last experience with Irene). But that’s the last time I have doubts like that.

Glad you guys are all okay!

    • Oh wow, 6 hours. The gas situation is out of control. Glad Derek was able to get some. My bro drove to CT yesterday. Happy to read you are ok also Yakini! XO

  2. I’m happy your family is safe! New York continues to be in our thoughts and prayers!

  3. Glad you are safe. I am an hour north of Manhattan and we are fine but my family in Staten Island, although are ok, are dealing with a disastrous situation there. I have been looking for places to donate, my cousin is doing a ton with the shelters and she said the supplies and donations they are getting are endless..which is great!
Thanks for the info..I posted it on my facebook as well!
    Take care hun!

  6. Here in the UK, we were so sad to hear about the terrible damage on the East Coast. I found it shocking to see so many of the places we travel to regularly so ravaged by the weather and our thoughts and prayers are still with everyone there putting their lives back together.

Your outfit looks fantastic – I particularly like the jacket and those wonderful shoes! Thank you for hosting Monday Mingle.

  7. the hurricane was soo crazy!! hope everyone is recovering smoothly from it!

Glad to hear you and your family are okay. It’s been quite a week. Some of my family in long island still do not have power. It’s going to be a long time before things go back to normal but like you said we are all lucky.

  16. I’m glad everyone in safe…and that you guys have regained power. I think you are right, as well – the media coverage is lessening but there are still so many in need. Thank you for bringing light to that. On another note – you look so thin and beautiful! I hope I look that great after I pop this one out in Jan :).

  17. So glad you guys are OK and reminding people that the aftermath of the hurricane is far from over.

It’s cold here in the northeast and there are thousands of families that may not have heat/electricity until the end of the week– not to mention the families who have lost EVERYTHING.

Little nudges like this to remind people who aren’t in the thick of it that this is not over is exactly what we need!

  19. So happy to hear that you and your family are ok despite how badly the storm hit your neighborhood. Luckily, we were without power for a very short period of time and things are back to normal here. You look amazing as always. Love the bag!

  20. I am SO happy that you guys are okay and warm and safe, even if the basement situation is not the best. We lost power for some time and just got back our heat and hot water, but we are truly grateful and lucky to have LIFE. I’m back at work today and I know it’ll be awhile before things are back to normal, but I am grateful.

I think it’s awesome that you’re working with those charities. It’s going to take a while, but people need all the manpower and help they can get.

    And those flats… super adorbs!

  21. So glad to hear you and your loved ones are pretty much safe and well, Jill – it must be awful for you but as you say it sounds like you’re one of the lucky ones. The UK has had several years of consistent flooding in different parts of the country and I think (barring fire) it must be one of the worst ways to have your home damaged, as it must take so long to get it sorted and back to living there. I’m so glad to hear you still have a home to go back to though :)

Considering the week you’ve had, you look so smart and gorgeous! Tweed and chambray is a lovely combination. Best wishes to you <3

I was worried about you so wanted to check in and see how you did with Sandy. It’s hard to fathom how much devastation has been left behind Sandy’s wake, and, like you, I didn’t really want to believe the hype. I’m so very happy to hear that you and your family are safe and hope your family soon has power in Long Island. The ones without heat are the ones I worry the most about as it’s become so cold the past few days :(

The gas situation is completely unreal. But you know, we are all safe and that’s what’s most important.

    XOXO

  32. So happy to hear that you and your family are safe. I’m in Hoboken, NJ and it hit us pretty hard. Our power was also cut on Monday night and a couple of minutes later the whole apartment started flooding, and again… I’m one of the lucky ones. I’m starting to settle into a new apartment and slowly rescuing stuff from the other. My power was restored on Sunday afternoon. Slowly falling back into the groove. Lots of blessings and thanks for the opportunity to donate to such great causes. – Carla
