It has been two weeks since my husband, daughter and I welcomed the newest member of our family. While we felt complete as a family since having our girl three years ago, this little boy filled an empty spot that we didn’t even know was there until he was finally here. Those first few days at home can be a little hectic, hazy and exhausting. They’re an endless cycle of trying to rest, taking care of your new baby, and if it’s not your first child, trying to take care of your older children and help them feel safe and secure and of course loved even though your attention is now focused on a newer person. Plus you want to try to stay sane in the face of so many sleepless nights and changes. I’m lucky because my husband is an equal partner and caregiver for our children but there’s one thing that he (obviously) cannot do and that’s nurse the baby.
It’s an extremely personal decision but after having my kids I knew I wanted to breastfeed. Once I finally figured out what I was doing things became much easier but it was very difficult for me at first. I was a new mom and nervous (and clueless) about so many things and nursing was definitely one of them. Everything from the basics like how to actually feed and hold the baby to what to wear while nursing to the logistics of nursing in public to what it really means to nurse on demand, was a huge challenge. Thankfully everything eventually fell into place and like many things when it comes to parenting, feeding my baby became second nature. Nursing my son has been much easier mostly because of the lessons I learned with my daughter so I’ve been able to enjoy this bonding experience earlier than I did the first time around.
One thing I wish I had after I gave birth to my oldest three years ago were sensible (ie. nursing friendly) yet pretty lingerie and pajamas. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at all the gorgeous options available now fashion-wise for nursing new moms. If I’m going to be exhausted and completely frazzled 24/7, I might as well look and feel good in what I’m wearing am I right, mamas?
A few weeks before I gave birth, I treated myself to a gorgeous new robe from Belabumbum. I had never heard of the brand before but when I saw the robe hanging on a rack at a boutique on the upper east side I knew I had hit the jackpot. I chose it because the cotton was SO luxurious and the lace was feminine, pretty and sexy. It was a happy coincidence then that shortly after my purchase Belabumbum reached out and asked if we wanted to try some of their recent styles of pajamas and nursing bras. It was a no-brainer to work together and I admit that I wore one of the pairs of pjs and one of the nursing bras that they sent over even before I gave birth! I’m wearing the robe and matching bra that was gifted in the photo of my family and me taken at the hospital just one day after my son was born.
In honor of World Breastfeeding Week, we’re excited to give away Belabumbum’s “Rachelle” nursing bra (a $53 value) to THREE lucky readers! Not only is this bra extremely practical, comfortable, and super soft (I’ve been living in mine) but it is just beautiful as you can see:
