Thank you to Ocean Spray for sponsoring this blog post. All opinions are my own.
When I was little I was addicted to TV. I would get so excited when the new TV Guide magazine would come in the newspaper and I would highlight my viewing schedule for the week. Seriously. But oddly I was most excited by the commercials, which I guess inspired my love of marketing and lifestyle from a very young age. I remember the commercial for Ocean Spray® so vividly as the farmers would wade around in a pool of cranberries in their waterproof overalls and knee-high boots and I was always so curious as to whether people really do this? Well, I'm here to tell you that they do and wading in a sea of cranberries is awesome.
Last Thursday, the Littles and I had the chance to wade in a 1,500 square foot cranberry bog to help Ocean Spray® celebrate the first day of fall as well as the bicentennial of the first cultivated cranberry harvest, at New York City’s Rockefeller Center®. We suited up in waders, jumped into the bog and had a blast with some of the nicest farmers we’ve had the pleasure of meeting. My Littles had so many questions about the thousands of cranberries beneath our feet and the farmers whose families had been harvesting cranberries for generations just over the river in New Jersey were all but happy to share their knowledge. Who knew that cranberries had little pillows of air inside allowing them to float on the water and cranberries are grown in marshy areas on vines, only floating when the marsh is filled with water for harvesting.
The Littles continued their cranberry immersion and had fun in the #CranberryClassroom learning how to plant their very own cranberry bog that is now awaiting some action on our windowsill. They were so intrigued by the whole farming process that they couldn’t get enough of the virtual reality station set up where they could watch 360-degree views of a real bog being farmed in The Most Beautiful Harvest video. They took turns watching the video on repeat on my iPhone the entire way home and even shared the feature with our neighbor. Moms, if you need a few minutes, definitely let your kids check this one out. It’s rather hypnotic.
Our afternoon in the bog and the official start of fall got me thinking about all of the holiday events that are already creeping into my calendar. Cranberries are perfect to incorporate into both savory and sweet recipes to make your dishes more festive. A potluck staple of mine is a delicious and colorful quinoa salad that incorporates Ocean Spray® Craisins® Dried Cranberries, pine nuts and cucumbers from this cookbook and I love making this Cranberry Almond Biscotti to package up to give out to teachers and friends. Biscotti looks so complicated but it’s actually really easy to make and yields really impressive results.
Unfortunately, the bog is packed up for another year but I can’t wait to see my littles’ reaction the next time a commercial for Ocean Spray® cranberries comes on TV.
