Stealing some "me time" one cup of tea at a time.

Typical morning:

At 5 a.m., my wriggly little alarm clock climbs into my bed with lots of cuddles, hugs, and loud whispers. Just about every morning, she plays on the iPad until either me or my husband are ready to tear ourselves from the warmth of our bed—which means I spend the next two hours going in and out of sleep as she wriggles around or taps me to show me the awesome cake she decorated in an app that was supposed to buy me some sleep.

Once I’m up, I turn into the human form of a cell phone reminder, only I robotically repeat the same instructions until a task is completed. First, I bark out “eat your breakfast” until I have no choice but to drag my five-year old back upstairs to supervise her getting dressed. Next, my reminder setting shifts to “get dressed. Get dressed. GET DRESSED!” while breaking up fights between my daughters. Once the clothes are on, we move on to “Sit still” while I do my best to tame the hair of a constantly moving child. Next, I repeat “put your shoes on” about 87 times before turning to “put your jacket on.” Once in a while I shout a different order at my much timelier and more self-sufficient 10 year old, but it’s usually more along the lines of “stop being mean to your sister!”

Once the bus comes and the house is suddenly silent and devoid of creatures who are constantly arguing, pulling on, and loving me, I’m completely exhausted. In fact, I’m ready for a nap and not at all ready to head upstairs, sit down to my laptop and start work.

That’s where my morning cup of tea comes in. I know some moms are coffee moms who can’t function without a jolt of caffeine in the morning. While I enjoy a nice (decaf, dairy free) latte as much as the next girl, tea is where it’s at for me when I’m looking to transition from the chaotic morning rush of motherhood into a functioning adult whose head is no longer spinning.

Enter Plum Deluxe, an online tea company that hand blends small batches of their signature loose leaf teas in their Portland, Oregon studio. Aside from selling their teas (which are organic, non-gmo, and free of chemicals and sulfites), Plum Deluxe also has a Tea of the Month Club.

For $10 per month, subscribers receive 1-2 oz of a custom (seasonal!) artisan loose-leaf tea made just for the club, a “surprise scoop” of an additional tea, access to a private tea lover’s community, discounts, and surprise gifts and treats.

I tried strawberries and champagne Celebration Blend (perfect for adding a little glamour to a decidedly unglamorous morning), the Self Care Blend (a combination of elderberry and apricot which makes the whole room smell amazing), and March’s decaf tea of the month (a yummy berry blend that gives me hope that warmer days are on the horizon!).

They were all delicious and I love that each blend is created with a specific feeling or experience in mind—it makes the experience feel far more luxurious than sipping on just any old tea. I also love the idea of giving myself the gift of a brand new tea each month to make my stolen moments of “me time” after the crazy morning rush seem more special.

Maybe I’ll even add a mid-morning relaxation session into the rotation…

If you need me, I’ll be curled up on the couch sipping me tea slowly while I try to speed read one more chapter of The Girl Before.
