Buddy The Elf is back on Broadway just in time for the holidays!

ELF The Musical

Would you believe I never saw the movie? I know, I know! Cousin Kat chastised me but I think I'll enjoy it even more watching it with Sebastian. Plus, I got to to experience ELF The Musical last night at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre without any expectations whatsoever, as opposed to other shows I've taken in recently (Annie & Ghost).

With everything going on in NYC, the holidays snuck up on me. ELF was the perfect way to get into the spirit. It's funny, fast-paced, and family-friendly. The audience was filled with theater-goers of all ages enjoying the colorful set of familiar, nostalgic holiday images. The song and dance numbers put a smile on my face and the 2-hour showtime (with a 15-minute intermission) is just about as long as I can sit comfortably.

"ELF is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. Buddy is raised unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list and his step-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas."

I think everyone can relate to the two main themes of the story: the desire to know yourself and your place in the world and the hope that if you believe/want it enough, happiness will be yours.

Cousins Kat and Tom accompanied me to the show and we all left with a smile. If it were a matinee I would have brought Sebastian too but delaying bedtime is risky. Hopefully ELF will be back again next year!
