With 13 Tony Award nominations, I'm sure you've heard by now that Kinky Boots is kicking some major Broadway ass! I was fortunate to see the high-energy, feel good musical earlier this spring and not surprisingly, had a blast.

Kinky Boots Broadway

Based on the 2005 British movie about a real-life shoe factory that struggles until it reinvents itself as a fetish footwear maker, Kinky Boots Broadway is everything I want from a girl's night out: fun, laughter, upbeat music, contagious energy, thoughtful conversation, nostalgia, and the feeling I don't want it to end:

Charlie Price is forced to step in and save his family's shoe factory in Northern England, following the sudden death of his father. Help comes from the unlikeliest angel, a fabulous drag performer named Lola. Together, this improbable duo not only revitalizes the nearly bankrupt business, but helps one another grow into the men their fathers always dreamed their sons would become and transforms an entire community through the power of acceptance.

The cast showed so much heart and enthusiasm, preview jitters were easily overlooked and I've since come to terms with the rude theater staff and bathrooms being locked after the show (maybe they were nervous too).

Grammy Award-winning fun girl Cyndi Lauper wrote the very "Cyndi Lauper" music and lyrics, and four-time Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein wrote the book. The dream team was on hand for previews leaving everyone quite starstruck. I almost worked up the nerve to say hello to Ms. Lauper ("She's So Unusual" was my first LP) but I get uncharacteristically shy in those situations and settled for standing next to her and tweeting about it instead.

If you're looking for a fun night out with the girls, you can't go wrong with Kinky Boots. Promise.
