Beauty Buzz: 5 Steps to Balancing Underarm pH

Underarm health and maintenance certainly isn’t the most glamorous of beauty topics but being dry and comfortable is a priority for all of us and a standard part of overall good hygiene. I can’t say I pay much attention to my underarms other than making sure they’re clean, shaven, and deodorized but as with most sensitive areas of the body, there’s more too it than just that. If you tend to sweat a lot from your underarms or not, you might be interested in understanding pH and how it affects your skin.

pH stands for power of hydrogen, a measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration in the body. Without getting overly technical, the pH scale is 0-14. Neutral pH is 7.0. The higher the pH (greater than 7) the more alkaline, while a pH lower than 7 is acidic. According to MindBodyGreen, which has helped me understand pH better, proper pH varies throughout our bodies but ideally it should be slightly more alkaline (7.35 – 7.45). Our bodies work hard to maintain its pH balance amid our poor lifestyle choices and toxic environmental factors.

Being conscious of these 5 steps to balancing underarm pH will not only keep us more comfortable but is important for our skin’s well-being, this our overall health:

STEP 1: Gently wash with a soap-free wash. Using your hands or a gentle microfiber cloth, cleanse the underarms with an ultra-mild wash. Soap-free formulas can still deep clean while naturally conditioning and restoring skin to the ideal pH. Using your hands or a soft cloth instead of a loofah helps protect skin’s delicate barrier. Some of my personal favorites are Dove Body Washes, Sebamed Liquid Face & Body Wash, and AVEENO.

STEP 2: Consciously rinse and pat try. Most of us forget to completely rinse and dry the underarm area causing water and cleansing residue to linger under the arms for unwanted itchiness. Instead of rubbing harshly with a towel, gently pat skin dry, which is much less abrasive.

Step 3: Swipe on sensitive skin deodorant. Many deodorants contain harsh chemicals that can negatively affect the skin. Try a natural deodorant or look for one made with balsam, a common hydrating oil that’s plant derived and soothing on sensitive skin.

STEP 4: No need to over-apply. Apply a thin, even layer of deodorant to the full area of the armpit (about a three-inch circle) using a gentle, single up-and-down swipe.

STEP 5: Eat a more alkaline diet (leafy greens, wheatgrass, veggies, sprouts, avocados, juices, green smoothies, soups) rather than an acidic one (animal products, processed carbs, refined sugar, alcohol, coffee). As with most beauty recipes and remedies, a healthy diet packed with fruits, veggies, and lots of water is ideal for skin health. Not surprisingly, the same goes for underarm health.

5 Tips for Healthy Spring Hair

tips for healthy hair

Spring is finally here and while the temperature may not yet have gotten the memo, warm weather is on its way!

There are a ton of fun, mom-friendly spring beauty trends fresh off the runways that I’m working on sharing but what’s always in style, is healthy hair.

Whether you wear it up or down, long or short, here are 5 tips for healthy hair that will help revitalize your tresses for spring and summer:

1. Seal and Repair Hair Cuticles: Are you overdosing on shampoo? Over shampooing strips hair’s natural oils, drying and weakening hair cuticles. Your hair cuticles are the outermost layer of the hair shaft, and are responsible for locking in moisture. Avoid shampooing every day, don’t use too much shampoo at each washing (a small quarter-sized amount will do), and be choosy about your products and their ingredients. If you’re noticing dryness, try a pH balanced shampoo (I like Sebamed Everyday) to help revive, close and seal the cuticles.

2. Choose a “Flake-Free” Diet: Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and protein are the best for a healthy scalp. Since about 3% of the hair shaft is made up of omega-3 fatty acids, they’re vital to keeping you scalp hydrated. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in foods like walnuts, almonds, tuna, and salmon.

3. Tame Frizz: Instead of loading your hair with oily serums and fly-away tamers, try styling with hair tools that produce ionic heat, which is a proven frizz fighter. I use the Rowenta Inspiration Pro Auto Sensor Hair Dryer. It locks in moisture, keeping my hair hydrated and resistant to breakage, which also gives it that salon-quality shine.

4. Promote New Growth, Naturally: When trying to grow out your hair its important to have split ends trimmed. I’m terrible about getting to the salon but every time I do, it’s so worth it. It puts the shape back and livens up my tresses. Also, giving yourself a gentle scalp massage for 10 minutes 2-3 times a week in the shower can loosen skin flakes, product residue, and natural oils, and increase blood flow to the scalp to help promote new hair growth. I know, I know, getting a 10 minute shower is a challenge but if you do, work that scalp!

5. Restore Life to Your Hair: Do you color your hair, straighten it a few times a week or use a lot of hair spray? Adding chemicals, applying heat and/or using a lot of products are habits that we all fall into and get hooked on. Unfortunately, like any addiction, they can come with some unwanted side effects. The best way to combat damage from coloring and styling is with hair masks. They work to restore and nourish the scalp which in turn makes hair smoother and appear more youthful. Try Repêchage Hydra-Amino 18 Hair Spa Seaweed Mask or Moisture Healing Mask from Nelson j Beverly Hills (so delicious smelling, I could eat it!). Apply your mask in the shower 1-2 times weekly or leave in longer for a deep treatment. I have oily hair (a good thing I suppose), so I use my masks like a conditioner.

Hope you find these tips helpful and they go a long way to helping you feel more glamorous this spring! If you have any tips that have helped keep your hair healthy and looking its best, please share with us in the comments below!

Beauty Buzz | Pretty in Pink

Evelyn Lauder Dream Lip Collection

Estée Lauder’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign this year features the Evelyn Lauder and Elizabeth Hurley Dream Lip Collection: a two-tone pink clutch filled with Estée Lauder’s full-size Pure Color Lipstick in Rubellite and limited-edition Pure Color Sheer RollerGloss in Hot Pink.

I’m obsessed with this duo. Rubellite is the perfect universal pink and the gloss adds just the right amount of shine without being sticky. I layered them here and have a feeling they’ll be on even heavier rotation come spring.

Also cool: twenty percent of sales of the Dream Lip Collection go to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® through June.

Nail File | The Perfect Valentine’s Day Mani

Zoya Carmen

I couldn’t resist this Zoya Nail Polish in Carmen at the Caravan Stylist Studio pop-up lounge at Century 21 Lincoln Center. Perfect for Valentine’s Day, don’t you think? Zoya is also toxin free and doesn’t contain formaldehyde and all the other bad stuff typically found in polishes. Hopefully it lasts through Friday! I usually apply another top coat after a day or two. Any secrets to extending the life of a mani?
