22nd Annual Bunny Hop at FAO Schwarz

Bunny Hop

Every now and again, an event pops up for media coverage that I just know will be the perfect date for Sebastian and I.  The times I’m able to combine my passion for social media with raising awareness for important causes while simultaneously spending time with my family, are pinch-me moments.

Last Tuesday, Sebastian and I attended the 22nd Annual Bunny Hop at FAO Schwarz hosted by Tiffany & Co. and The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s Associates Committee’s to benefit the Pediatric Family Housing Endowment.  The fund pays for overnight stays at special nearby accommodations when children an their families come from out of town for treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s renowned Pediatric Department and are unable to afford the expense.

We arrived at the GM Building with time to kill so naturally we rode the glass elevator at the Apple store up and down repeatedly.

Inside the Bunny Hop, guests got to run wild through FAO Schwarz after hours, which was really an extraordinary experience.  I can’t help but think of the movie “Big” every time I enter the famous toy store.

The activities were certainly centered around the little guests and included: games by Kids In Sports; face painting by BongarBiz and Faces by Derrick; cookie decorating by The Cookie Party; Freeze Frame Giant Piano Photos; costume dress‐up areas provided by Let’s Dress Up!; sand art by Craft Studio; live animal presentation by A Touch of Nature; entertainment by Magic Al the magician; Sammie and Tudie; Miss Pinkie’s Playhouse; Todd Neufeld’s Twisted Balloon Company; musical entertainment by MME Entertainment; Wendy the Pipe Cleaner Lady; and a live musical performance by Broadway Babies.

I’m pleased to report the Bunny Hop raised over $311,000 for this incredibly worthy cause!  Thank you to the hosts for including us.  It was a magical and memorable date night for S and I as well.

Phew.  What a week it’s been.

When I heard rumblings about a hurricane headed towards the East Coast, I didn’t give them much credence since Hurricane Irene two summers ago never materialized into the catastrophic storm it was predicted to be.  That seems so foolish now.

Our power was cut on Monday evening, before the storm even hit New York.  Fortunately, we were able to find a hotel in midtown to bring the boys until our power was restored on Friday night.  It was one of the scariest and most uncomfortable times I’ve experienced living in NYC.  Information was slow to trickle in and it was days before we became fully aware of Sandy’s effects.

Despite being displaced for much of the week and coming home to a basement filled with smelly Hudson River water that damaged our boiler and knocked out our heat, we’re the lucky ones.  My parents still don’t have power on Long Island, my aunt’s house was severely damaged, and my brother can’t get fuel for either his car or his truck to get back to work but they too consider themselves lucky.  People died.  People are homeless.  People are cold and hungry.

I know it’s difficult to understand how dire the situation is unless you’re here witnessing or suffering the devastation first hand.  We all want to settle back into our routines and focus on the happy occasions to come but please know that even though the media coverage is lessening, there are so many people whose lives have been forever changed and still need aid.

We’re working with two great charities on the ground here in New York worth highlighting:

Baby Buggy®, who I featured last month for its partnership with Rebecca Minkoff and Bravado Designs, is collecting coats for families in need.  Mail to: Baby Buggy, 306 West 37th Street, 8th Floor, NY, NY 10018.  Include your name and return address for a tax letter.  You can also ship much-needed items like diapers and wipes straight from Diapers.com to Baby Buggy or if in the NYC area, Momtrends is collecting donations at its office in DUMBO.  Contact Nicole for address/more info.

For manufacturers and retailers of apparel and home fashion, Fashion Delivers works with the fashion industry to provide new merchandise to local agencies to distribute as needed.  They’re currently collecting for Sandy victims and anticipate the most needed items to be: shirts, pants, socks, underwear, sweatshirts, blankets, and towels.  Click here for donation info.

One participant linking up with #MondayMingle this week will have a cash donation made on her behalf to both Baby Buggy and Fashion Delivers. UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who linked up for this special Monday Mingle! The donation will be made in honor of Chasing Davies.

Have a good week.

“Monday Mingle” is a weekly fashion/personal style link-up rotated between Momtrends, BonBon Rose Girls, and Glamamom. I'm also linking up with What I Wore Wednesday hosted by The Pleated Poppy.

Tollytots Playdate in the City | Top Toy Picks for Holiday 2012

TollyTots Playdate in the City

Is it too early to talk holiday?  Well, for the toy industry and parent bloggers, tis the season!

I typically publish my Holiday Gift Guides late November/early December but I know that’s last minute for the ambitious set out there so this year I’m making an effort to pass along “Top Picks” lists as soon as they come along.

Time To Play Magazine had its 2012 Holiday Showcase last week but it was a sad, drizzly day and I didn’t want to take Luke out.  You can find its newly released Holiday 2012 Most Wanted Toys List here (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back!).

This past weekend though, Bubba and I had a “Playdate in the City” at 620 Loft and Garden in Rock Center hosted by Tollytots, maker of kids’ favorite toys including My First Disney Princess, Graco, Fisher Price, Rubik’s, Safety 1st and Baby Genius, to benefit Operation Smile and for a sneak peak at its hottest holiday toys picks:

Sebastian got to take home Baby Genius’ Be-a-Star Sing-Along Juke Box and Sing-Along School Bus, and My First Rubik’s Cube. They’re all a major hit, the jukebox being the clear winner.  He literally sits, listens, and sings-along to all the different song options.  It’s adorable.

Oh, and the terrace and views from 620 Loft and Garden overlooking Fifth Avenue are spectacular!  That’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral under construction in the background.  Bubba earnestly asked if he could go swimming:

Tracy Anderson’s ‘The Pregnancy Project’ | NYC Launch Event Benefiting Every Mother Counts 10/5

Tracy Anderson's 'The Pregnancy Project' Benefiting Every Mother Counts

Tracy Anderson, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Christy Turlington Burns are hosting a launch party this Friday at The Standard to celebrate Tracy’s newest DVD series, The Pregnancy Project.  Net proceeds from the event, as well as a portion of sales from the DVD, benefit Every Mother Counts.

The Pregnancy Project is designed to be a guide for expectant parents and covers everything from nutrition, to fitness, to the leading studies on pregnancy.  Similar to Tracy’s successful Metamorphosis DVDs, the series contains more than just the workouts.  It provides nine different workouts, one focused on each month of pregnancy, which Tracy filmed in real time during her pregnancy with her new baby Penelope.  It also contains interviews with doctors, mothers, Tracy’s clients, and various experts on pregnancy.

Founded by Christy Turlington Burns in 2010, Every Mother Counts is an advocacy and mobilization campaign to increase education and support for maternal mortality reduction globally.

Hundreds of thousands of girls and women around the world die every year from complications in pregnancy or childbirth, of which experts believe 90% are preventable.

Every Mother Counts is committed to:

  • Raising awareness and mobilizing action on maternal health among the America public
  • Mobilizing financial resources for maternal health & directing 100% of funds raised to effective programs
  • Encouraging policymakers to demonstrate leadership on maternal health care

Hope you’ll join me on Friday for this star-studded event and very worthy cause.

Rebecca Minkoff for Bravado Designs | Limited Edition Essential Nursing Tanks to Benefit Baby Buggy

This morning I joined friends at Alison Eighteen for a reception hosted by Julia Beck and the Forty Weeks team to celebrate designer and newly-minted Glamamom Rebecca Minkoff’s Limited Edition Essential Nursing Tank Collection for Bravado Designs.

Rebecca Minkoff And Bravado Designs Launch A Nursing Tank Benefiting Baby Buggy

You know how much I love these tanks.  They’re stylish, comfy, and of course, functional.  And YES, that’s BravadoMama Model Search winner, Mari Torres!

Named “Luca” and “Indy” respectively, 20% of sales from the colorblock tanks will be donated to Baby Buggy®, a non-profit organization founded by Jessica Seinfeld to provide essential equipment, products, clothing, and services for infants and children of families in need.  Bravado Designs will also donate a new bra or tank for each limited edition tank purchased.

Minkoff shared, “As a new mom myself who benefited from the support of both Bravado products and an encouraging community, I know how important it is to have the proper support and tools when nursing.  I am truly honored to be a part of this collaboration and welcome the opportunity by contributing to help new mothers on their journey.”

Call for Action | “Soar with Reading” Provides Books to Kids Who Need Them Most

Soar with ReadingJetBlue and PBS KIDS have teamed up again this year for Soar with Reading, an award-winning program designed to excite and inspire kids’ imaginations to take flight through reading.

A recent study shows that there is only one age-appropriate book available for every 300 children living in under-served communities in the United States.  That’s less than 1% of the number books available to children in middle-income neighborhoods.

To help address this critical shortage, Soar with Reading launched a new grant program designed to provide books directly to the children who need them most.  Together with your help and the support of select local PBS member stations in BlueCities across the U.S., Central America and the Caribbean, Soar with Reading will provide age-appropriate books for thousands of children in need.

TAKE ACTION!  Visit SoarwithReading.com and share the name of your favorite children’s book.  For every submission, JetBlue will donate an age-appropriate book to a deserving child through partner Barefoot Books.  Up to $200,000 worth of books will be donated through this program!

While on the site, you can access free summer reading materials, including an interactive reading list, reading tips and more.  As a special thank you, adults who share their favorite book can also enter into a sweepstakes to win great prizes, including a JetBlue Getaways vacation package.

NYC EVENT 8/10:  Soar with Reading is hosting a local event in Manhattan on Friday, August 10th at 10:30am at Riverbank State Park, where kids will enjoy a reading by Barefoot Books author Susan Reed, a musical performance from PBS KIDS’ Mr. Steve and more.

I will do my best to be there but everything depends on the weather these days!

AHA Wall Street Run & Heart Walk 2012

Today is National Running Day, and while I’m not clocking much mileage at this point in my pregnancy, I had the opportunity to participate in the American Heart Association’s Wall Street Run & Heart Walk last week with Team Jenny Craig and brand ambassador Valerie Bertinelli.

Team Jenny Craig Wall Street Association 2012 with Valerie Bertinelli

Heart health is a personal issue for many families, including my own, as heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. According to Dana Fiser, Global CEO of Jenny Craig, 42% of the country will be obese by 2030. Evidence shows that losing 5-10% of your body weight reduces your risk for cardiovascular diseases through improvements in blood cholesterol levels.

Exercise is good, that’s a no-brainer.  It’s fun events like the Wall Street Run & Heart Walk that provide the motivation. I’ve actually run this event a few times in the past so I was honored to be able to participate again this year, even with my big belly.

“Team Jenny” leader Valerie Bertinelli famously lost 40 pounds through Jenny Craig in 2007 and inspired her mother, who had emergency heart valve replacement surgery in 2008, to lose 54 pounds on the program as well.  I was looking forward to strolling alongside her and chatting about itty bitty blue bikinis, Van Halen, and Mackenzie Phillips but despite announcing her strategy to walk the first 2 miles with the team, she bolted out of the gate and never looked back.

Fortunately, Mitch, Ellen, and Alicia stuck with Team Jill and we enjoyed a gorgeous evening in Lower Manhattan. I’ve never really spent much time that far downtown, especially since 9/11, but I have fond memories from a summer I worked in the World Financial Center before my senior year of college. Walking the quaint, curvy streets overflowing with young business professionals at happy hour left me feeling nostalgic and really appreciative to be strolling down memory lane, literally.

Sunset over Jersey City

The finish line at the World Financial Center had us ending alongside the Hudson River just as the sun was making its final descent over Jersey City.  I was stiff immediately after but woke up feeling energized and accomplished.

Thank you to Jenny Craig for sponsoring us!

Did you lace up today and make strides towards living a healthier lifestyle?

{I was not compensated for this post. My participation in the walk was sponsored by Jenny Craig and I will be receiving a complimentary month of the Jenny-Set-Go program.}

Carnival Night for Kids, 6/13 in Central Park

Carnival Night NYC Invite

On June 13, 2012, hundreds of families will gather at Central Park’s Victorian Gardens for the Coalition for the Homeless’ annual Carnival Night for Kids.

All proceeds from Carnival Night benefit the Coalition’s Camp Homeward Bound, the nation’s first summer sleep-away camp for homeless boys and girls, and Bound for Success, an after-school and summer day camp program.

Held at Victorian Gardens in Central Park, Carnival Night is fun for adults and kids alike. Amusement park rides, face painting, arcade games, stilt-walkers and more will keep youngsters entertained while adults enjoy drinks and dinner.

Most importantly, it is an opportunity for caring New Yorkers to come together in support of the Coalition for the Homeless and its programs for New York’s most vulnerable children.

With the number of homeless families living in emergency shelters at record levels – including more than 17,000 children – your help is more critical than ever.

Sebastian and I will be there.  Will you join us?
