Oh yes I did!
Who would've thought Kylie Jenner and I would have something in common?! One of the many differences, is that I'm more than happy to dish about my new, subtle enhancement.
To give you a little background, I visited Dr. Ellen Marmur, a leading cosmetic dermatologist in Manhattan, to discuss a new dermal filler called Restylane Silk. You may have heard of Restylane before but the Restylane Silk variation just launched this year and is the first and only FDA-approved filler for subtle lip enhancement and the treatment of wrinkles and lines around the mouth. It's a naturally occurring hyaluronic acid that when injected, can restore definition and symmetry to the lip and mouth area.
I've been intrigued by fillers as an alternative to surgery since I first learned of them and while I'm certainly not adverse to "aging gracefully," I do have a couple of "problem" areas that could use a little help with the whole "graceful" concept. I'm also wildly asymmetrical and was pleasantly surprised to learn that fillers like Restylane Silk can be used to balance symmetry of the face.
My lips have never really been a hang up for me, although I do have a bit of a natural frown or "resting bitch face," as I like to joke. I've been told one too many times by random strangers on the street to "smile" or "be happy" even when I was in a perfectly good mood. So basically, I'm a great candidate for Restylane Silk and was more than willing to give it a try for reconnaissance.
I knew having a highly-qualified, top dermatologist like Dr. Marmur administer the injections, I would be in good hands but the very idea of having my face injected with a needle completely freaked me out and almost made me reconsider.
Fortunately, Dr. Marmur and her team were totally understanding of my fear and walked me through the entire process. I sat with numbing cream on my lips and around my mouth for about 10 to 15 minutes and when it came time for the needle, I just kept my eyes closed the entire time. Honestly, I could barely feel a thing while I was receiving the injections. A small pinch or pressure here and there but the injections themselves were not painful.
All the injections (I forgot to count how many) took about 5 to 10 minutes and when I looked in the mirror I saw an immediate difference. My lips began to swell and got progressively more swollen over the next 24 hours. The numbing cream lasted about an hour or so and when it wore off I was definitely in (tolerable) pain but wondering if I made the right decision. Would the pain get worse? Would the swelling continue? Would I bruise? I was actually seeing Jennifer Nettles on Broadway that night and during intermission I needed to get ice to help cool off my lips. I would have obviously preferred to have been in the privacy of my own home and won't make that mistake ever again.
When I got home, about 5 hours after the injections, I iced a little more and went straight to bed. I woke up the next morning feeling sore and still swollen but the pain was less than the night before. I had Sebastian's 100 Day Celebration at his school and felt comfortable going, even though I knew my lips looked a little puffy. You would have only noticed the swelling if you know me well and were staring at my mouth. I did not get bruising on my lips or around my mouth and the pain was manageable at all times. My biggest issue was fear of the unknown.
For the next day or so, the swelling continued to go down and eventually there was no discomfort at all. I was restricted from vigorous exercise for 24 hours, alcohol, sun exposure, pursing my lips or massaging the injected area. Nothing too bad (except the no alcohol part).
The final results are subtle but exciting. Restylane Silk helped plump up the corners of my mouth and make my bottom lip look more defined. Dr. Marmur also injected Restylane Silk into my Cupid's Bow (the curve of the upper lip) to make it slightly more pronounced. Here's before, the next day, 2 days after, month 1, and month 2 so you can see the level of swelling I experienced plus how my lips look now. The angles and lighting aren't perfect, I know. I really need to step up my "before & after" selfie game.
I'm extremely happy with how Restylane Silk worked for me. I don't think you would ever know I've had any enhancement, although it's clear from the photos that my bottom lip is fuller and the line where my lips meet is straighter. Without these photos, it's hard for me to even remember what my lips looked like before and what the differences are, although I feel the fullness and lipstick goes on flawlessly. The results are that subtle and natural.
Ever notice how certain celebs become more polished and attractive as their level of stardom rises? Sure, it's access to top of the line hair, makeup, and wardrobe, but often its fillers that account for that "something is different but I can't put my finger on it" observation. I've learned that very small changes to the face can make a huge difference and I have both Restylane Silk and Dr. Marmur to thank for mine.
I can't emphasize enough how important it is to go to a licensed dermatologist that is experienced with the filler you are interested in exploring. We've all seen those horror photos of bad plastic surgery and fillers. Always err on the side of caution. Less is definitely more!
The results of Restylane Silk are expected to be visible for 6 to 12 months, which is a nice amount of time.
