Matilda The Musical

Roald Dahl's Matilda comes to life on a stage in Matilda The Musical, now on Broadway.

A couple of weeks ago I gave my kindergartner niece a big surprise when I arrived to pick her up early from school. My sister told her that I'd be there to get her after lunch and the smile on her face when she greeted me was almost too much to handle. When I told her we were going to see Matilda The Musical on Broadway, a story that she didn't quite know but has heard so much about, her face lit up with contagious excitement. Broadway is one of my favorite things about New York. When I was little my parents' biggest splurge was taking us to the occasional matinee. Pulling up to the theater in the middle of the day brought me right back to my own childhood.

I loved Roald Dahl's books growing up and seeing Matilda come to life on a stage was like a childhood dream come true. It is the story of a smart, curious, mischievous little girl, her horrible (and dumb) family, the cruel bully of a headmistress who terrorizes her and her classmates, and the kind teacher who believes in her.

Watching my niece who loves the theater, music and dance, was as magical as the show itself. She laughed out loud throughout the show and even during the sadder moments she squeezed my arm and whispered how sad the scene was. We both felt so many emotions and nothing could have prepared us for the magic that unfolded on that stage that day.

With everything from laser beams, jokes for grown-ups and kids, beautiful choreography, confetti, swings, and trampolines it was a show as entertaining for children as it was for adults. But beyond all the bells and whistles that made the show a powerhouse of fun was the story itself and the way it was brought to life by the beautiful, moving, and sometimes gut-wrenching songs and the actors who sang them. The kids were incredible. We even watched "Revolting Children" on YouTube on our iPad on the way home because once is not enough to hear that anthem of independence and revolution when those amazing kids finally stand up to their dreadful headmistress.

I would recommend this show hands-down to anyone of any age looking to have a good time at the theater.
