5 Steps to Healthy Summer Skin

Summer is the perfect time to reevaluate your internal and external skin care routine. Here are 5 steps to healthy summer skin.

I've been shouting from the rooftops all month long about June being the perfect time to reevaluate beauty routines and make adjustments for the impending heat, humidity, sun, salt water, and chlorine exposure. There are so many fabulous skincare and makeup products on the market for all skin types and budgets, there's no excuse not to be totally in love with your skin. Beauty products are only one piece of the puzzle though. The quality of our sleep, the food we eat, and amount of exercise we get all greatly impacts the look and feel of our skin.

Inevitably my face and body are showing more wear and tear than ever but as I've gotten older I've also gotten better at choosing the right products and applying makeup, drinking water, and wearing sunscreen, so in many respects I've never felt better about my skin. Here are the 5 steps I (try to) take for healthy summer skin:

Step 1: Clean & Exfoliate

I'm pretty religious about my bedtime routine to remove oil and makeup at the end of the day but I've stepped up my game and added a cleansing brush to make sure I get a deep clean. I'm a lot oilier in the summer and prone to breakouts so making sure I've gotten all the makeup off my face goes a long way towards more clear, luminous skin. I also switch up my body wash to something with a more floral scent (currently using this) and exfoliate my face and body a few times a week to get rid of dead skin cells and dullness. I'm a big fan of airbrush and self tanning and a fresh, clean foundation is a must for a even faux glow.

Step 2: Hydrate

I've learned to hydrate from the inside out. While I've never been able to gulp down the recommended 8 glasses a day (I would have to live in the bathroom!), I've gotten much better at drinking water and cutting out sugary drinks. When I drink a lot of water, I notice an immediate difference in my skin. Water is the driving force for many of our bodily functions and helps flush toxins from the body. If you have a hard time hydrating, try drinking sparkling or coconut water.

From the outside, topical moisturizers and night creams contain ingredients that keep the skin hydrated and elastic, and many of the ones I use contain anti-aging properties to fight wrinkles, dark spots, and sagging. Because of my oily skin, I always swap out my heavier moisturizer and night cream in the summer in favor of lighter formulas that control oil.

Step 3: Sleep, Diet & Exercise

These 3 are probably the most difficult for me as a mom even though I know they're the most crucial for an overall healthy lifestyle. "Beauty sleep" is many doctors' top skin tip including Elizabeth Tanzi, MD who recommends the following:

  • Develop a regular bedtime schedule and stick to it (good luck with that mamas!)
  • Avoid caffeine 4 to 6 hours before bed (ditto!)
  • Limit alcohol and heavy meals before sleep
  • Try to wake up at the same time every morning, even on weekends (sadly moms will have no problem with this one)

Diet is also critical to the skin quality we have. Many times pimples are breakouts are allergic reactions to substances in our food. You know, and I know, as tough as it can be sometimes, eating fresh fruits and vegetables, and drinking water are the best options for skin health.

Another must is regular exercise. It's well documented that exercise is essential for the skin because it increases blood flow and circulation and delivers much needed oxygen and nutrients.

Step 4: Protect

The best way to protect our skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation that cause skin damage, premature aging, and cancer is to continuously apply sunscreen. SPF only protects from UVB rays so a broad spectrum, mineral based sunscreen is necessary too. Here's a list of highest rated, safe sunscreens to choose from. It's 2013 people, please avoid tanning beds at all costs. Pale is beautiful and on trend!

Step 5: Add Color

If you still want a sun-kissed glow, there are endless bronzing and self tanning options available from prestige brands to mass market that do a very decent job at darkening and illuminating the skin. Summer is also a great time to play with eye, lip, and nail colors that can compliment your skin tone and outfit choices.
