I have always loved creating; using my hands to make things that previously did not exist is always something to which I’ve gravitated.
I have this memory of being about 4 years old, standing over the bathroom sink making “potions” using everything I could find in the cabinets: shampoo, conditioner, liquid soap, lotion and baby powder (the “fairy dust,” of course). My poor mother. I’m sure she didn’t look too kindly on that back then but now, fortunately, enough time has passed that we can laugh about that extremely expensive potion.
Fast forward to this past February: I had recently left a rewarding career as a DIY writer for companies like The Home Depot and Tiny Prints by Shutterfly to embark on the greatest journey of my life – motherhood! But now that my son was a few weeks old, I needed to figure out what I was going to do after a *reasonable* maternity leave ended.
I found myself faced with the dilemma that so many women today must address: You had a baby. Time to get back to work. Now what?
And if I was ever going to make a change, this was the time to do it. So, I started thinking about what I loved to do and how I could turn that into a stream of income.
As I pondered, several girlfriends came over on separate occasions and they each commented on the candles that I had burning. “Where did you get these candles? I love them!” And when I responded that I made them, they all said the same thing: “You should totally sell these!”
The more I thought about it, the more I realized it could be a viable option. After all, Country Living liked them enough to do an online feature about them last year. So, if friends and strangers were interested, isn’t that a pretty good sign?
When I told my husband that I was considering starting a candle business, after he recovered and wiped the “Have you lost your mind?!” look off of his face, he pointed out how I’d need to find a niche to stand out in an extremely saturated candle market.
Like so many “meant to be” things in life, I looked to my past to shape my future. The one constant was music. I am a New York City-trained vocalist and I married a professional pianist. I majored in Theatre Performance in college with an emphasis in Musical Theatre. In short, music flows through my veins.
And it’s not just me. Music plays such an important role in so many people’s lives. Think about the big milestones you’ve experienced. I’m guessing you can remember the exact song that was playing when you had your first kiss, or met your spouse, or danced your first dance at your wedding, or found out you were pregnant with your first child. Music is literally the soundtrack of our lives.
So that was it: I was going to bring music to life in the form of a candle! And no one else was making music candles, so it was the perfect way to break into a highly competitive market.
But why stop at music? Why not book candles and classic movie candles, too? And that was the “a-ha” moment – I would take your favorite anthologies (collections of literary works, including songs, books, and movies) and turn them into candles. In other words, I bring your favorite anthologies to life!
But what does “music” smell like?
For some scents, the answer is fairly straightforward; some of my candles are inspired by the song title itself. For example, the classic Christmas song “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” is easy enough – our “Chestnuts Roasting” candle smells like spiced nuts and firewood!
Other times, I recreate the experience described in the song or book. This is what I did in the case of our newest book-inspired candle, “Wardrobe Into Narnia,” based on my all-time favorite children’s books, The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.
The children walk through a wardrobe (cedar wood) into a magical forest (juniper trees) during perpetual winter (winter berries and crisp winter air). The end result is an enchanting scent that is both whimsical and homey at the same time.
And still other times, I want to transport you into the book, movie, or song itself. Have you ever wondered what Harry Potter, Ron, and Hermione smelled in Hogsmeade? Our “The Three Broomsticks” candle gives you my interpretation of just that:
The Three Broomsticks is the name of the pub in Hogsmeade made famous by the magical brew created there: Butterbeer! Our “The Three Broomsticks” candle smells like warm brown sugar, caramelized pralines, and notes of vanilla bean. Sugary, buttery deliciousness!
Whether you’re a fan of Sherlock Holmes or Ed Sheeran; The Wizard of Oz or Gone With the Wind; Disney’s Mary Poppins or The Little Mermaid; Wicked the Musical or “Winter Is Coming” (from Game of Thrones), we have a candle for that!
They are made with all natural soy wax and natural fragrances infused with essential oils. Each candle is custom-blended and hand-poured in small batches to ensure the utmost in quality and craftsmanship. And the best part is the accessible price point: our 8 oz. candles are $16 and they burn for 60-75 hours depending on how long you burn each time. We also have tea light samplers for each of our categories that make fantastic gifts for the music, book, classic movie and Broadway lovers in your life for only $15. All in all, the perfect, unique, handcrafted, one-of-a-kind gift for under $20!
