Hostess with the mostess! 3 items to always have on hand for last minute guests according to Tom Colicchio and Kelly Ripa

To demonstrate their commitment to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and raise awareness, Eloctrolux brand ambassador Kelly Ripa and fellow New Jersey native and restauranteur Tom Colicchio, hosted a media lunch tutorial with tips and tricks for pulling together the perfect impromptu party.

It's not every day that I have my lunch prepared by an award-winning celeb chef and get entertaining insight from one of television's most bubbly hosts, all for a great cause, so I was front and center and all ears. It was glimpse into what an episode of "LIVE! with Tom and Kelly" would be like and I think everyone present would agree they making a dashing pair. The chemistry between them was natural and playful and they had everyone in stitches (I fell hard for the recurring cured meat jokes. What can I do? I'm a cheap laugh).

I absolutely adore Kelly Ripa and she didn't disappoint. Two of my not-so-secret fantasies are to be a soap opera star and/or talk show host. Or maybe I just really want my hair and make-up done every day, have someone pick out my clothes, and talk incessantly to a captive audience. Who knows. In any case, I'm smitten. She was down-to-earth and hilarious, a nice counter balance to Colicchio's take-charge demeanor.

So what are Chef Tom and Kelly's recommendations for handling last minute dinner guests? Don't stress and simply be prepared!

  1. Always keep a host of go-to edibles on hand that you can pull out last minute to munch on or even prepare a light meal. Colicchio always has olives on hand and also suggests pickles. Figs, walnuts, cheeses, cured meats, bread, and jarred spreads like Tapenade and onion jam are easy to pull together and present well.
  2. Keep a few of your favorite bottles of wine chilling in the fridge.
  3. Put your guests to work. Everyone likes to help out and there's no rule that says your guests need to be waited on like they're in a restaurant.
  4. Have a couple of easy go-to recipes for a light meal and always have those ingredients available. Colicchio likes to roast a chicken for his guests and prepared us a pasta & vegetable dish all in one pot.

The food and wine were delicious, testament to the fact that you don't have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen to present a great meal, and the Electrolux appliances being showcased were pretty sweet to look at.

“The right appliances can make all the difference and Electrolux is committed to helping impromptu entertainers always be ready,” said Kevin Scott, CEO of Electrolux Major Appliances, North America. “Our new French Door Refrigerator is built with their needs in mind -- from our Party Ice system which means there will always be plenty of ice on hand to our Perfect TempTM drawer which keeps all your party essentials at precisely the perfect temperature. No matter who drops by, never fear. You’ll be ready."
