Decorating and entertaining are among the most exciting aspects of the holiday season for me. Nothing represents the holidays more than spending time with friends and family and reflecting on how thankful I am for everything this little life of mine affords me. We now host our family's long-standing Christmas Eve celebration in our own home, giving us the opportunity to let each and every family member know how much they mean to us. My own memories of the holidays largely center around this annual gathering. It isn't the toys I remember most (well, I’ll never forget that Barbie Dream House) but spending time with my grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles. Now my greatest joy is hosting the family to give our sons their own holiday memories and traditions.
Our home is a reflection of who we are and one of my favorite ways to welcome holiday guests and make them feel at home, is to add personal touches that let them know just how lucky we feel to have them with us. This year, with the help of our friends at Shutterfly, we've added some personalized holiday cheer to a guest room for impending visitors.
Shutterfly Home Decor is personalized with your favorite images, colors, and designs and can be completely one-of-a-kind. There are so many fun and stylish home decor and entertaining ideas I had difficulty deciding on individual pieces but I knew immediately that I wanted to personalize a guest room with a holiday theme.
Photographs and prints are an easy way to personalize and warm up your walls. Shutterfly has tons of options to fit any home's style. For a cozy reading corner, I had three canvas prints made. A bright, bold “Merry Christmas" piece, with a photo I found in Shutterfly's Art Library, hangs between two cherished family photos: last year’s holiday card with all four of our boys, and four generations of Mayer men, a photo taken in Buenos Aires five years ago with Leo’s father and then 91-year old Abuelo (he turns 96 this winter!). I love the festive red and green colors and that I can easily relocate the prints throughout the house or gift them.
The cowhide bench is accessorized with a custom pillow that has the year Leo and I got married. It's the perfect holiday, wedding shower or anniversary gift, too. It's affordable and only takes a minute to customize.
I also made a pillow for the bed using recent cell phone photos of the boys and their grandparents. These were candid snapshots my in-laws texted me after a visit this summer. Since my parents and in-laws are our most frequent guests, this personalized pillow will be a mainstay year-round. I adore the quotation “Happiness...Is when I spend time with you.” It embodies everything we feel about our loved ones and want our home to convey.
Lastly, my in-laws celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this fall. To commemorate, I made a framed art print with a photo they texted us of their dinner celebration. It's adorning one of the bookshelves and will be a little surprise holiday gift for them to enjoy during their stay and take with them when they leave.
Holiday decorating and entertaining with personalized items like wall art and pillows is the perfect way to welcome guests into your home, spread holiday cheer, and mark difficult-to-buy-for gift recipients off your list!
