My friends and family tease me because I have an obsession with buying in bulk. I am not kidding when I tell you one of my favorite things about living in the suburbs is having the space to store all the household items I stock up on. It's economical and it makes shopping trips infrequent. I really laughed when I learned about a social experiment called Fear of Running Out or "FORO," conducted by the water and beverage delivery service, ReadyRefresh℠ by Nestlé®. This is me! I totally suffer from FORO!
What is FORO? you may be asking yourself. Well, buying bottled water by the individual bottle means you're spending way too much time restocking at the grocery store. Buying in bulk keeps your shopping trips infrequent, but those cases are so heavy, and big box stores are energy-sapping circuses. With that dreaded trip to the store looming, a sense of anxiety takes over. As your bottled water supply dwindles, you begin to hoard those last few bottles for your kids, your spouse, or even just a thirstier moment. This is a phenomenon referred to as The Fear of Running Out—denying yourself and your family the bottled water they want just so you don’t have to go back to the store or add another inconvenience to your day.
To give you a little background on my own FORO, I stopped drinking soda years ago thanks to Poland Spring Sparkling water. Now, I literally drink sparkling water all day long. My desk is covered in empty bottles by nightfall and I always make sure to have plenty on hand, not only for me but for guests. If I run out, I end up not drinking as much throughout the day and don't feel like myself, especially if I've worked out. I'm also more likely to crave unhealthy alternatives. Thirsty choices aren’t always smart choices, and a lack of healthy beverage options often means reaching for whatever is available, which could mean sugary sodas.
To study the “Fear of Running Out” (FORO) phenomenon, ReadyRefresh℠. worked with my buddies Vera and Bill and their family to conduct a two-week, in-home experiment which tested their behavior when the supply of an everyday essential like bottled water began to dwindle. The experiment demonstrated changes in their behavior and their ability to adhere to healthy drinking habits. Take a look, they are the cutest!
In tandem, ReadyRefresh℠ also conducted a survey of 4,000 individuals across the United States to collect statistics around water consumption habits and the FORO phenomenon. Some interesting stats:
- More than half of all surveyed (52%) experience FORO at least once a week.
- 69% of those surveyed experience feelings such as stress, anxiety and worry when household items start to run low.
- 69% of survey respondents run low on everyday household items at least once a week.
- Nearly half of all full-time working parents (46%) surveyed say they ration or replace everyday household items with a less desirable alternative at least once per week, in order to avoid running out completely.
- Of those surveyed, three out of four (75%) working parents would buy more household items in bulk if it was more convenient.
- According to the survey, more than half of full-time working parents (55%) say that daily errands keep them from spending quality time with friends and family.
Would you believe beverages account for 47% of added sugars in the US American Diet and more than 13% of calories consumed per day? The newly released 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that the primary beverage consumed should be either calorie-free - especially water - or should contribute beneficial nutrients such as fat-free and low-fat milk and 100% juice. ReadyRefresh℠ believes that our hydration should never hinge on the inconvenience of restocking our bottled water supply. Having our favorite bottled water on hand, without hassle, keeps us in control of what we drink, and when.
The ReadyRefresh℠ mission is simple: make it easy for families to live a healthier lifestyle. With just a few clicks or a few taps on a mobile device, we can quickly customize an order for our favorite beverages to be delivered right to our door! The ordering process is super easy and I received major savings off my first order. Don't be a statistic! Eliminate FORO and save up to $50 off your first order here!
