Ghost | The Musical

Cousin Kat and I joined The MOMS on Broadway last night at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre for a performance of Ghost, The Musical.

Incidentally, we were just talking about the film earlier this month as we strolled the cobblestone streets of Soho (where Willy Lopez shoots Sam) after leaving Pera for Katherine's birthday celebration. I was elated to get the invitation since I'm always down for a show.

The film is one of my all-time favorites and I can't help but watch it every time it's on television.

There. It's out in the open. Under all these dresses and beauty products is even more girl. I'm actually watching it right now as I type this since Leo's away on business tonight and my "Ghost time" is about to become even more scarce.

You're probably wondering if the musical lives up to the film and of course it doesn't. I mean, could it ever really? Patrick Swayze and a blunt-cropped Demi? That's a pretty high bar. I was 13 when I saw Ghost in the movie theater. It's probably one of the reasons I'm a hopeless romantic and have an affinity for overalls. But while the characters and plot are essentially the same, the musical is by definition completely different and entertaining in its own right.

The special effects used to convey the ghosts and the afterlife are like nothing I've ever seen live before. It's as much a magic show as it is a musical. The young cast is unquestionably talented (especially standout Da'Vine Joy Randolph as Oda Mae Brown) and well, who doesn't want to believe Sam's final words to Molly as he luminously ascends to heaven:

The love inside, you take it with you.
