Pee-wee's Playhouse

Much to my disappointment, I didn't win the Mega Millions last week. I really wanted that $355 million.

But as the saying goes, when one door closes, another door opens. And that's exactly what happened Thursday night when Anna from Random Handprints invited me to be her guest at the HBO taping of The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway, which has ended its limited engagement.

How FUN? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway

Of course I jumped at the opportunity. Pee-wee's Playhouse was a Saturday morning staple growing up.

Would Chairry be there?! Jambi?! Globey?! Cowboy Curtis?! Miss Yvonne?! C-C-C-Conky?!

Yep, all the favorites appeared, even a Penny cartoon. And the laugh-out-loud humor was as silly and innocent as I remembered.

It was a lot like this clip from Funny or Die. But on Broadway, Pee-wee's having the playhouse re-wired for an Internet connection and all the puppets in Puppetland are afraid his online relationships will replace them. Silly puppets. That could never happen! Unless of course, Pee-wee starts a blog.

We were lucky to be seated next to a couple that might just be the biggest Pee-wee Herman fans on the planet. They'd already seen the show but came up from DC for the taping and were returning home immediately after the show. Anyway, they were filled with FUN ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! facts and cheering like it was a Justin Bieber concert, which added to the euphoria of being a kid again.

My favorite part of night was actually after the show ended and the audience participated in re-takes. Paul Rubens stayed in character and ingeniously improvised.

Little did I know it wouldn't be my last brush with the rebel...

Arriving at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, I checked into foursquare and became eligible for tickets to a party Pee-wee was hosting at the new Bowlmore Lanes in Times Square, which I ended up winning!

So Sunday night my cousin Tom and I hit Times Square to hang out with Mr. P.W. Herman:

So FUN! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
