Just as spring sprung and the blooms bloomed, we had the good fortune of meeting Brooklyn-based photographer Evelyn Laniado at our home for a family photo shoot.
Other than Christmas-time, we rarely make professional photos a priority, which is a shame because the kids are growing so rapidly and we really cherish quality photos that memorialize this fleeting time. I generally find family shoots stressful and intimidating. Standing still and looking serene is not something that comes naturally to the rascals and it's a lot of pressure to have everyone dressed up and on best behavior. Shooting at home and finding a patient, family photographer that makes everyone feel comfortable is half the battle for us.
Evelyn is a mom of two young children herself and no stranger to "unpredictable conditions." One look at her portfolio and I was immediately impressed by her ability to capture kids in motion and beautiful use of light. She has a photography degree from FIT and has photographed dozens of babies, kids, and families throughout her career.
We spoke on the phone a week or so before the scheduled shoot for a brief consultation during which she introduced herself, explained what to expect, and made recommendations about wearing color and coordinating outfits. She then joined us on a Sunday afternoon at our home for a photo session. Sebastian had broken his hand the week before in a bounce house accident and was wearing a temporary cast, and consumed by our upcoming trip to Disney World, I didn't have time to get the boys haircuts or have the dogs groomed but we made it work and these photographs capture the perfectly imperfect reality of the day.
The kids and dogs were all over the place of course and getting them all to look at the camera was a challenge but Evelyn enthusiastically rolled with it, making them laugh to capture their attention. We had one outfit change but the boys grew tired and distracted long before Evelyn did. I suspect she could have kept on going and going!
We got a glimpse of the photos a few days later and a full set of proofs within a couple of weeks, as promised. I don't know what goes into the editing process the time and careful attention is obvious. I'm very happy with the shoot, photos, and print options, and definitely plan to work with Evelyn again. She has a full menu of packages, prints, and specialty items to customize the experience. You can learn more by visiting evelynlaniado.com and viewing Evelyn's gorgeous Instagram account.
