Before the kids headed back to school, we enjoyed one last hurrah with a weekend "staycation" at the Langham Place New York Hotel in Manhattan. Summer was rather busy for us this year with some big family celebrations in addition to camp and sports. A family getaway was just the change of scenery we needed to recharge for the new school year. Langham's convenient location, luxury accommodations and amenities, combined with its family-friendly staff, made our visit a travel experience we won't soon forget. Here's what makes Langham so special:
Location: Langham Place New York sits on Fifth Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets in Midtown just steps from Bryant Park and the 7 train, making it an ideal home base in New York City. Friday night we walked over to the 6 train and easily traveled down to Chinatown for dinner. Saturday we walked over to Bryant Park and hung out around the Times Square area. Sunday, we took another nearby subway up to the American Museum of Natural History. It was a relief to feel that all of our desired destinations were easily accessible via a quick walk or a nearby subway, especially since we had the kids in tow.
Rooms: When selecting a hotel for our family vacations, we always look for suites that have a kitchen and at least one private bedroom. The Family One-Bedroom and Residence Suites at Langham Place are perfect for families. We stayed in a Residence Suite, an over-sized one-bedroom apartment-style suite with contemporary furnishings, a full kitchen with Miele appliances and a Nespresso machine, and private laundry facilities. It has an over-sized walk-in closet of my dreams that leads to a large marble bathroom with a deep soaking tub (complete with a television in the mirror), and a smaller half-bath. The rooms are spectacular and the kids were beside themselves when we first walked through the door. We all were. Let's be honest. There are panoramic views of the city skyline and the spacious room allowed us to really stretch out.
The lighting was impossible and my photos don't do the suite justice so here's what my photos would have looked like if I were a professional photographer with good lighting:
Now some of my actual photos of the kids making themselves right at home:
Dining: Not surprisingly, the kids were obsessed with ordering room service. They loved the on-demand, kid-friendly menu delivered right to our door, while Leo and I were blown away by the sheer number of options. Langham's room service literally has something for everyone with a lot of great healthy options as well. Not that we ordered particularly healthy. Steak and wine were calling our names all weekend!
In addition to room service, Langham has two restaurants on site: Ai Fiori and Measure. Michelin-starred Ai Fiori ("among the flowers" in Italian), is a Mediterranean fine dining experience. The service was incredibly kid-friendly and the food is out of this world. I was extremely nervous bringing the kids out after hours to what I assumed was an "adult" restaurant but the chef and staff clearly want to attract a family clientele because they were wonderfully patient and attentive to our petite diners. We had a tour of the kitchen and the children enjoyed steak and Shirley Temples. They really rose to the occasion and were on their best behavior. I just may have gotten over my "fancy restaurant with kids" phobia.
Alongside the lobby is Measure, a bar/lounge serving handcrafted cocktails and local brews with luxury comfort fare. We had the opportunity to sample Measure for Sunday afternoon high tea. Whether you're staying at Langham Place or jut local, I highly recommend the experience. Tea time includes Bento Boxes filled with sweet and savory treats. Guess which one the rascals preferred?
Activities: Another one of the highlights of our trip was working out with family fitness expert Steve Ettinger, as part of Langham's newest family program, "Family Fun & Fitness."
Ettinger created itineraries for all guests staying at Langham Place, based around a customized walking map featuring Manhattan landmarks like the High Line, Bryant Park, Central Park, with stops along the way to optimize sightseeing as well as outdoor fitness for the whole family. Rainy day tips for staying active, which can be done in-room, are also included.
Guests who book the Family Fun & Fitness package also receive a specially curated gift bag created by Ettinger, which includes a branded nylon backpack, water bottle, and a copy of “Wallie Exercises,” a children’s book written by Steve with art by Pete Proctor. The kids were thrilled to arrive in the room and find a little treat with their name on it. It also provided some fun stuff to do in the room.
Saturday afternoon we had a family fitness consultation with Steve, which is available to guests at $175 per hour. We met at Bryant Park and Steve spent the hour engaging us in all kinds of activities from stretching to running to jumping. It was a great way to get the blood flowing, let the kids blow off some steam, and experience the park in a completely unique way:
Service: What really distinguishes a family hotel most for us, is its service. Traveling with children is inherently stressful and being surrounded by kind and compassionate people that "get" kids is paramount. The staff at Langham Place treated us, and most importantly, the kids, like royalty. Sure, they're loud and unpredictable (and Lucas tried multiple times to swing a large piece of art hanging from the ceiling in the lobby) but no one ever made us feel anything but welcome. The room was spotless, delivery was prompt and courteous, and there were small touches of love throughout the trip to make us feel welcome, like fruit and veggies when we arrived, and personalized cookies and milk for an afternoon pick-me-up:
It was such a treat to attend this press trip with Leo and the kids and experience all Langham Place New York has to offer. Earlier in the summer, we stayed at the new Legoland Hotel Florida and Disney's Animal Kingdom Resort in similar suites at the same price-level. It's difficult not to compare the experiences. Langham's food and luxury accommodations exceed all areas by a mile.
As the holiday season approaches, I highly recommend considering Langham Place for your family travel needs.
